Good afternoon Why do a 3rd party review? We often get asked, “why should we have you review our plans; they have worked for a long time?” There is no one easy answer but here are a couple of reasons why. We are looking with unbiased eyes. When you drive past the same sign every day, eventually you no longer see it. When we see the sign, we just see it without your history. How does having you look help us? We can evaluate if your safety plans are in accordance with the most recent industry changes. We have been able to identify issues in training that if they had not been addressed could have resulted in tens of thousands in fines. By having us perform an on-site in-depth inspection, we can help you reduce costs, identify unsafe practices, and improve your safety culture by giving you a checklist of items tailored to your location. Listen, I’ve been working with teams on their SOPs for over 30 years and I can tell you one thing: in most cases, the SOPs aren’t user-friendly and, in many cases, employees don’t follow them because, well, they’re just too difficult to follow. Instead, employees figure out the task for themselves or ask someone else who knows how to do it for guidance; the result can be inferior products, injury, damage to equipment, the list goes on. If nothing else, every organization should assess whether its SOPS are working or if they’ve just been created to meet a requirement. Lots of different ways to assess whether your SOPs are working: try following them yourself, have someone unfamiliar with the process follow them, have someone read them aloud; all of these are quick and easy and can give you insight into the usefulness of your SOPs.
