I’ve not always got this right myself, but airport security can be the place where this feels like it’s really gone wrong…
People in high-vis shouting at children who are confused by a really unnatural environment that feels pressured and overloaded with information. Then shouting at the parents because the kids aren’t doing what the staff think they ought to be.
Families being split up by guards in the name of efficiency rather than kept together for the sake of harmony and well-being.
Airport staff barking “boarding pass” with no eye-contact or non verbal cues to point toward who they are attempting to ‘interact with’; then getting angry at the person who asks “who me?”.
I really dislike any animals on this planet being treated in these mechanistic ways.
The lack of human decency leads to these systems being allowed to spring up and solidify… and then the system we’ve created has a top down effect of dehumanisation on humanity…
How do we break it? I’m not completely sure, but I think part of it starts with one smile, a thank you and a please at a time… and ongoing moments of wonder at the wonder-inducing being(s) stood in front of us!

Hey, so I've just been through airport security. Come on, humanity. We can do better. We're treating each other like factory farmed animals, and we know what a disaster it is for animals when they're factory farmed, when we're in systems like that, it doesn't serve us very well, but it doesn't have to be like that, surely. And the reality is, those systems are an amalgam of the way that we treat each other on an interpersonal level. And the people who are working in there. I know you're stressed. I know it's difficult. I know you got pressure from above. You don't have to treat people like that. It causes. That fighting that causes angst, a smile and a little bit of courtesy goes a long way. We don't have to create stressful environments because those stressful environments, those institutions, those ways of acting, are born out of the one-on-one interpersonal way of being. So let's learn to smile each other, let's learn to greet each other, let's learn to treat each other with dignity and respect, whether you've got a sort of theological view that people are made in the image of God or they've got a soul, whether you can just stand back and marvel at the wonder of biology in the way that we've evolved. To be beautiful, sentient beings, let's treat each other like that. Whichever modality, whichever framework we want to use for that, you know, we are beautiful beings. We're powerful beings. We can make decisions that transcend our animal instincts, and we can transform this. Let's aim for something better. Hey, so if you're working in that industry, please just look at the human in front of you and treat them like a human. Let's all try and do that.
