#ThrowbackThursdays 7 million Californians live in Health Professional Shortage Areas – areas that have a shortage of primary, dental, or mental health care providers. The vast majority of Californians in these areas are Black, Latinx, and Native American. Just as with students in education, healthcare provider diversity improves patient outcomes. In our blog on Diversifying the Health Professions, we highlight just one of the many connections that a lack of equity in education (in this case, medical education) can lead to challenges on an even larger scale. Concussion education can play an important role to #starttheconversation regarding knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions around head injuries. In today's Research In Action blog, James Wilkes, PhD, MEd, ATC and Lindsey Calandra, MSN, CRNP of the Minds Matter Concussion Program at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia share why it’s important to consider disparities within that education. When is a good time to ask if someone feels unsafe in their current relationship in a healthcare setting? This initiative places this conversation in the bathroom where patients are more likely to be alone. My only feedback would be on the instructions hung next to the stickers. Is it enough to get people's attention without an image? An image might get their attention more quickly and effectively than word blocks. And perhaps the directions could be even shorter and located much closer to the red dot on the paper. Currently, the standard directions are placed closer to the red dot than the directions meant to accompany the red dot. What do you think?
Students in Jacey Greece’s communications strategies course collaborated with the Tennessee Department of Health on an initiative to encourage victims of abuse to disclose their circumstances to healthcare providers. “The passion and ideas that we had are going to do something, and as a student, that is something we do not always necessarily think about—the idea of something that we contributed to theoretically and conceptually ever touching someone’s life,” says Aubree E. McMahon, MPH (SPH‘23). “It has definitely changed the energy with which I approach my work.” Learn more ➡️ http://spr.ly/6044Xjkg8

It's now standard for doctors, nurses, and public health folks to be trained to understand and take action on the social determinants of health (SDOH) including racism. But what about judges? Enter Salus Populi--a program of the Northeastern University School of Law. It educates judges about SDOH and "seeks to provide [them] with... a more complete view of the context and constraints that affect litigants who appear in their courts... and to increase judges’ awareness of how their decisions may impact health and health equity." More than 600 judges from 26 states have gone through the training so far, and early data suggest the program is meeting these goals. With RWJF support, Salus Populi is now developing a dedicated curriculum for judges on structural racism. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/duYCy7sC https://lnkd.in/dbcbmWD3
