This effect could have serious unintended consequences for women who are at an increased risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

In 2020, 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, with 685,000 deaths globally. In Ireland, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While increased awareness and better screening are detecting and diagnosing cases earlier than ever before, better selection strategies are needed to avoid giving unnecessary chemotherapy to patients who have early-stage disease. Cancer researchers University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin have developed a new test which can reliably predict metastatic spread in breast cancer patients. This patented technology #OncoMasTR was exclusively licensed into a UCD spin-out company #OncoMark, founded by one of the inventors, Professor William Gallagher of UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science (SBBS). OncoMark has developed and clinically validated the test in over 2,300 breast cancer patients, leading to the acquisition of the company by a large US firm who is now bringing this test to the clinic. Once introduced, this test will give more tailored treatment options to early stage breast cancer patients and their supporting clinicians, and should allow for potentially up to 60% of eligible patients to avoid unnecessary chemotherapy. The project was a Finalist in the UCD Research Impact Case Study Competition. #preventionispossible. #breastcancer risks awareness. #breastdensity. #genomics. #CHEK2. #previvor. Passionate about #informeddecisions & #shareddecisions. I want to empower you to #knowyourrisks. MBBS, FRACGP
Every single argument about the POTENTIAL "harms" of #breastscreening goes away if you provide adequate #informedconsent and allow #women to decide what is right for them. We don't need to be protected, we need to be informed. Informed consent is a conversation about benefits, risks (not harms), limitations (eg. the reduced ability of mammograms to detect breast cancer in #densebreasts), costs, and what might happen if you do not screen. https://lnkd.in/ezWZW42i #knowyourrisks #breastcancer #informedshareddecisions
