Did you know that the amount of pregnant individuals affected by gestational diabetes is similar to those who suffer from gestational (pregnancy-induced) hypertension? According to the National Institute of Diabetes, “2%-10% of pregnancies in the US are affected by gestational diabetes”. On top of this, “50% of women who develop gestational diabetes end up becoming type-2 diabetics”, meaning they suffer from diabetes for the rest of their lives. Diabetes already affects 11.6% of the American population, totaling 38.4 million people according to the CDC. So how do we treat this? Exercise, which is beneficial for all individuals, is especially important when helping mitigate gestational diabetes, as physical activity removes sugar from the blood due to the body’s need for fuel. It is also even more crucial that pregnant women with gestational diabetes avoid sugary foods to keep their blood sugar low. Types of Diabetes Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. There are several types of diabetes, each with its own causes and treatment. * Type 1 Diabetes: This type is often diagnosed in children and young adults. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin every day to survive. * **Type becomes resistant to insulin, or when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to meet the body's needs. Type 2 diabetes is often linked to obesity, physical inactivity, and family history. * Gestational Diabetes: This type of diabetes develops during pregnancy. It usually goes away after childbirth, but women who have had gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. * Other Types: There are other, less common types of diabetes, such as monogenic diabetes and diabetes caused by other medical conditions. Managing Diabetes: Regardless of the type, diabetes can be managed through: * Healthy Eating: A balanced diet can help control blood sugar levels. * Regular Physical Activity: Exercise helps improve insulin sensitivity. * Medications: Insulin or oral medications may be necessary to manage blood sugar levels. * Regular Monitoring: Checking blood sugar levels regularly is essential for managing diabetes. Living with diabetes can be a challenging and overwhelming experience. This chronic condition disrupts the body’s ability to properly process blood sugar, which can lead to serious health complications. It’s important to understand the three main types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes, and to know that each type requires a unique approach to treatment and management. For individuals with type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, making it essential to monitor blood sugar levels and administer insulin as needed. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is characterized by insulin resistance, which can be managed through lifestyle changes and medications. Gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy, can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Recognizing the symptoms of diabetes, like increased thirst and urination, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing, is crucial for early detection and treatment. If left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, and blindness.
