Dr Sean Mulcahy and Professor Kate Seear have been awarded the Andrea Durbach Prize for Human Rights Scholarship. The prize is awarded annually to a work published in the Australian Journal of Human Rights that reflects the values underpinning Professor Durbach’s career and scholarship. The article examines how often-unseen parliamentary human rights scrutiny processes unfold in Australia. Drawing on interviews conducted with former and current members of parliament, their staff, and others directly involved in the scrutiny process, Dr Mulcahy and Professor Seear explore where and how committees do their work, who is at the table, who speaks and who listens. They argue that the different spaces and voices at play have a crucial role in establishing human rights norms within parliament. "This is an important but under-researched issue, one that has implications for the way in which scrutiny processes can offer protection against rights limitations," says Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Human Rights and ex officio president of the jury for the Andrea Durbach Prize, Claire Higgins. "We commend the authors’ creativity, the sophistication of their analysis, and their advocacy for a more thorough and transparent consideration of human rights in the legislative process." Supporting and protecting DEI programs from conservative groups and the GOP is crucial. These programs serve as vital mechanisms for fostering a more inclusive society, dismantling systemic barriers, and promoting equal opportunities for all individuals. By safeguarding DEI initiatives, we not only uphold the fundamental values of fairness and justice, but also contribute to creating environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. Embracing diversity not only enriches workplaces and communities, but also leads to innovation, creativity, and more equitable outcomes for everyone. The journey began in 1927 with Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo, the first Hispanic-American elected to the U.S. Senate from New Mexico! Dennis Chavez succeeded Larrazolo to the same senate seat and served for three decades. Following him, Joseph. M. Montoya served as a Senator of New Mexico as well. Today, there are five sitting Hispanic-American senators: Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, and Senator Alex Padilla of California. Is the arrogance and extreme partisanship of President Wu a result of the QC drinking water? Jewish students are being physically assaulted and their lives threatened. Columbia University and other esteemed colleges are cancelling classes. It's apparent throughout the USA. Yet even after attaining the highest level of professional success, Wu still cries. He tries to compare the plight of the "yellow" people with the Blacks and other ethnic groups. Yet here lies a primary difference. When others came to America, they didn't set up exclusive large zones (Main St) with exclusive Chinese languages and Chinese signs. They didn't disregard the traditional Melting Pot of America. Wu and Liu talk about ill treatment. Perhaps they can explain how Liu was elected? President Wu can be a lobbyist for Chinese interests. This is America not Communist China. Yet the lobbyist hat and the primary safety of the most threatened Jewish students cannot be worn simultaneously. Perhaps others will have the courage to opine. Sometimes you just have to speak out. President Wu has no problem.

As global uprisings for racial justice put questions about historical and ongoing racial injustice higher on academic, public and political agendas, TJ scholars increasingly started to explore which dynamics of racial injustice might be supported by, or reflected in, the practice of TJ. In this conversational piece with Joyce Hope Scott and Tine Destrooper we explore what the implications are of the mobilisation of TJ rhetoric and tools by racial justice activists in the U.S., both for the specific struggle for reparative justice, as well as for the broader domain of TJ. This paper is published as part of a special issue on Reimagining Transitional Justice for a Less Violent, more Inclusive World edited by Caitlin Biddolph and Caitlin Mollica. https://lnkd.in/erccQUNZ

Restoring Meritocracy Policies that mandate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are nothing more than a continuation of discriminatory policies that prioritizes someone’s race or sex instead of their merit and quality. In any endeavor, the most qualified candidate should be the one chosen. But Biden’s DEI programs and policies only perpetuate the discrimination they claim to be fighting. Fortunately, Congressman Michael Cloud (R-Texas) and Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) has introduced the Dismantling DEI Act which would comprehensively defund the federal government’s wasteful and harmful DEI efforts. The bill prohibits all racist diversity, equity, and inclusion practices such as sensitivity training, and meticulously eliminates statutory authorization for specific DEI programs from the U.S. Code. This bill is part of a larger effort to root out DEI across the country. Similar efforts are underway in state governments and university campuses across the country. https://lnkd.in/eKRyvph2 Restoring meritocracy to the federal government is a top priority. Heritage Action anticipates that it will issue a Key Vote cosponsorship of this bill and include it on our legislative scorecard.
