This week, we're analyzing the latest updates on Risant Health, the nonprofit health system created by Kaiser Permanente in April 2023. Kaiser announced its Q2 earnings, closely followed by unveiling new plans for North Carolina-based Cone Health. If you missed our previous post about Risant Health, catch up here: https://lnkd.in/eWgfXAXT Our three things that matter: 1. Risant’s decision to acquire Geisinger in March of this year indicates strong returns. Kaiser reported $7.4B in first-quarter income, with about $4.6B attributed to a non-recurring operating gain from the acquisition. Additionally, experts posit that the acquisition is accelerating Kaiser’s performance and operations. The company’s financial reports parallel this theory: in the second quarter, Kaiser’s operating margin rose to 3.1%, up from 2.9% during the same time last year. 2. Kaiser is establishing a strong foothold in value-based care across diverse markets, particularly as it seeks to revolutionize healthcare delivery and access. Risant’s acquisition of Cone Health is expected to be finalized in early 2025, pending regulatory approval. This marks the second major acquisition for Risant, following Geisinger. While the immediate financial impact on Kaiser’s bottom line may be limited due to its size, the acquisitions create a strategic pathway for Kaiser to establish itself as a leader in the value-based care sector. 3. Risant plans to invest $1B in Cone Heath over the next five years, underscoring Kaiser’s commitment to this venture and the potential long-term impact of this substantial capital infusion. The investments will focus on facility upgrades and health equity initiatives. Additionally, the allocation of up to $400 million for integration into the network and $300 million for growth opportunities signals a proactive approach to ensuring Cone Health’s successful assimilation into the Risant ecosystem. As Risant continues to expand its influence in value-based care, what do these developments mean for both patients and other healthcare organizations? Will any challenges arise in integrating these new systems? Source: Healthcare Dive #ro3llc #RisantHealth #KaiserPermanente #ConeHealth #Healthcare #ValueBasedCare

Great to hear about Sir Keir Starmer’s pledge to bring back the family #GP However clearly no economics to support this With more and more GPs - being made redundant - and wanting to change careers / leave GP So how to make up the quoted 8k GP shortfall? 🤔 Where’s the voices of GPs in this? Do we have enough effective leadership amongst GPs to influence the outcome? We have a lot of GPs interested in our Doctors in Industry Fellowship who recognise that to have a future career with full autonomy - they need to invest in themselves enabling influence at scale and in a non-clinical capacity as a leader - not just one patient at a time. All #doctors are #leaders. Problem is that too many doctors don’t see that in themselves.

The ladder is out, the lattice is in. Executive career advancement inside and across highly matrixed organizations often means moving sideways or diagonally rather than upward. In this new article, Jason Petros and Keshia Harris show how healthcare leaders can navigate the lattice while keeping their eyes on their ultimate goals. #executivecareer #impactfulleadership

🤔 I continue to be fascinated by what is going on in CalAIM. ➡ I’m actively looking for examples of where MCPs are turning CalAIM from a “check the box activity” to an “out-of-the box transformation”. It appears that adopting a mindset of risk-taking, experimentation and iteration is critical for any MCP who truly wants to be transformational. CalOptima, Orange County’s public plan, is taking such an approach by hiring leaders like Kelly Bruno-Nelson, who have deep experience working with Non-profits and CBO’s…and supporting the innovative approaches she is championing. This recent interview with Kelly, conducted by Freed Associates, highlights the approach that the organization is taking. 💰 A LOT of STATE MONEY is being directed toward this program. All the MCP’s are leveraging it. 👏 But Kelly’s quotable sentiments about what money CAN’T buy are so important: “You can’t purchase [community] buy-in” “You can’t buy capacity” “You can’t buy experience” Meaning, you can throw a lot of money at a problem…but that does not guarantee success. And it definitely won't happen overnight. All the MCP’s must be willing to embrace the unknown, try radical new approaches, and be OK if every move is not empirically successful. In my experience working at a for-profit plan, this philosophy is not usually in the organizational DNA. But it sure seems like it needs to be. #calaim #transformationalchange

1mo"The combined organization would employ approximately 50,000 team members at more than 550 sites across Michigan. The systems said this will improve outcomes, access and experience, and place a greater emphasis on population health and value-based care." It is fascinating that numerous 2024 LinkedIn Reformists' Posts opine on Federal/national Intervention of Price Transparency of Hospital, Medical & Drug Prices and on Consolidations as US Healthcare Delivery and Payment Systems' ESI Cost Stabilizers; but the 2025-2030 Delivery and Payment Systems in their markets are moving to Regional power and control over both Systems thru the development of Narrow In-network PPO Plans and Drug Formularies that Employers will likely move their Plan Participants to because they, thru new financial Risk-sharing incentive In-network PPO Provider Agreements, will have substantial effect on their Employee/Patient Access Area annual Health Spend budgets.
