💭 Wisdom tooth extraction, also called removal, is a surgical procedure to take out one or more wisdom teeth. These are the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. ➡️ If a wisdom tooth, also known as a third molar, doesn't have room to grow, it can become impacted. 🙌 Here’s a brief overview of the process: 1/ Consultation and examination: Initial assessment and discussion. 2/ Preparation: ➡️ Anesthesia: Local anesthesia (numbs the area), sedation anesthesia (relaxes you), or general anesthesia (puts you to sleep) will be administered depending on the complexity of the extraction and your comfort level. 3/ Extraction: ➡️ Incision: If the tooth is impacted (trapped within the gum or bone), the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone. ➡️ Bone removal: Any bone blocking access to the tooth root is removed. ➡️ Tooth removal: The tooth may be extracted whole or broken into smaller pieces for easier removal. 4/ Cleaning and closure: The site is cleaned of any tooth or bone fragments. ✓ Stitches may be used to close the wound and promote healing (some dissolve on their own). ✓ Gauze is placed over the extraction site to control bleeding and help form a blood clot. 5/ Recovery: You will be monitored as the anesthesia wears off. ✓ Post-operative care: You’ll receive instructions on managing pain, swelling, and diet, as well as any prescribed medications. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to check healing. Note: This is not personalized healthcare advice; for that, kindly refer to a #healthcare professional near you.
