Today, we’re proud to share the second report in a three-part series that examines the impact of community health centers in LA County. “Community Health Centers in Los Angeles County: Creating Jobs Amidst Workforce Shortage” focuses on persistent health care workforce shortages, despite a dramatic increase in staffing by health centers over the past decade. The health care workforce simply is not growing or diversifying fast enough to keep pace with the increasing demand for care, and LA County residents are suffering the consequences. Community health centers are leading the way with promising strategies to combat workforce shortages, from developing strong talent pipelines, investing in recruitment and retention, to providing training and support to existing staff. What exactly does a CHW do? There are over 100 job titles for CHWs, here are some of the ways that CHWs make impact in the community through their job roles. Community health workers typically do the following: -Coordinate care among individuals, communities, and health and social service systems -Conduct outreach, such as through home visits -Provide culturally appropriate health and informational resources -Oversee case management and resource access -Advocate for individuals and communities regarding housing, food security, and other needs -Provide coaching and social support, such as nutrition training, recovery services for mental health and substance use disorders, and chronic disease management and prevention -Provide services, such as basic health screenings and first aid -Increase individual and community participation in assessments and education to improve health and well-being Fellow CHWs, which one do you connect with below?
