The teacher shortage is a complex issue, but at its core tells us that the American culture of disregard and disrespect for industries that involve care needs to change. Teachers, and all care workers, deserve better pay and benefits and greater autonomy and respect. They need not be treated as pawns caught in political crossfire but supported by society as they support the hard and important development of students nationwide. They deserve access to the materials and training they need to help their students thrive, no matter the zip code in which they teach. The system is failing as we knew was inevitable, and our youth and teachers deserve better. They deserve recognition, compensation, and the space to find joy in their profession. Creating safe, supportive, engaging, and inspiring school cultures is essential--so much more so than the band aids that are proving to have inverse results for turning around this shortage.

"I'm very scared - worried...it's going to take more than just the educational system to fix this." Oh ya...and the students and parents are noticing too: 1️⃣ "It is pretty rare not to have 4-5 substitutes a week." 2️⃣ "At one point we had a teacher quit at the beginning of the year and we were switching substitutes every day." 3️⃣ "I just hope and pray that there is someone good in the classroom." We are seeing the gradual collapse of public education every day now.
