🎥 Empathy in Africa: Bridging the Healthcare Divide 🌍
In a professional journey over the last year and half, I’ve had the privilege to work on a short documentary, "Empathy in Africa: Bridging the Healthcare Divide," telling the story of access to healthcare in a township in Johannesburg, South Africa, and it’s awesome to see it launch this week.
In "Empathy in Africa," we delved deep into the impact of healthcare access on a community known for its challenging infrastructure, overcrowding and limited access to basic resources. The film chronicles the development of the Rhiza Babuyile clinic. Co-funded by Viatris, it is the township’s first private brick and mortar healthcare facility, offering basic care and pediatrics and reducing healthcare inequities for the people of the township.
Our team on the ground met some of the most inspiring health workers and patients whose stories were told with such candor, humility, and compassion. It’s a story of partnership across sectors and demonstrates how new healthcare models can empower healthcare workers to have more ownership over their professional journeys, ultimately providing their patients with better access to the care they need. Their resilience and dedication left an indelible mark on me.
🎬 Highlights of the Journey:
- Seeing mothers empowered as caregivers, including navigating the challenges of infectious diseases in motherhood.
- Observing the entrepreneurial spirit generated by Rhiza Babuyile directly impact the nurses and workers in the clinic, helping them thrive in their roles.
- Witnessing first-hand the impact that private-public partnerships can have.
- Being accepted into three film festivals (and counting).
I invite you to watch "Empathy in Africa" and experience these powerful stories first-hand – I’m hoping you’ll find it to be a testament to the strength of community and the transformative power of healthcare.

In Diepsloot, a township of Johannesburg, South Africa, having access to healthcare can be a matter of life and death. A clinic in this South African town is not only addressing a need for access in its own community but also serving as a model for primary healthcare beyond its borders. With support from Viatris, Rhiza Babuyile, a local NGO, built this primary health care clinic in the heart of the community.
In our short documentary, "Empathy in Africa: Bridging the Healthcare Divide," hear from the people who are served by the clinic -- and those who care for them -- about the impact this project has made not only on their health, but also on their social and economic empowerment.
