Recently, I had the privilege of meeting Mr.Gautam Saraogi the founder and CEO of Go Colours, and the insights gained were invaluable. A few key notes from this discussion. Building a Brand in a Low-Differentiation Category: ·  Identified a gap in the women’s bottomwear market as they shifted from saris to two-piece separates. ·  Focused on the niche of bottomwear, which had few organized players. Growth and Unit Economics: ·  Started in 2010 with general trade, then moved to kiosks, and finally EBOs (Exclusive Brand Outlets). ·  Focused Expansion: Reached about 80-100 kiosks, focusing initially on a small area in Chennai. This localized saturation ensured that Go Colours became a household name, leading large format stores (LFS) to approach them instead of the other way around. Achieving 30%+ EBITDA Margins: ·  Focused on rent-to-revenue ratios and gross margins. ·  Adapted strategies based on real-time feedback and performance metrics.   Growth Milestones: ·  Opened the first kiosk in Chennai and expanded to 80-90 kiosks nationwide by 2013-2014. ·  Transitioned from kiosks to stores, reaching 650+ stores by 2023. ·  Focused on maintaining a healthy rent-to-sales ratio and high gross margins with small stores, mostly under 300 sq ft. Category Focus: ·  Stick to core categories as long as growth exceeds 20-30%. Growth and Adjacencies: ·  Prioritize vertical growth over horizontal expansion. ·  Enter new categories only when current ones are fully matured. Cluster Strategy: ·  Evaluate growth at the cluster level rather than individual stores. ·  Ensure revenue growth aligns with cost increases in clusters. Average Bill Basket: ·  Monitor the average bill basket for growth. ·  Focus on increasing the average transaction value per customer. From 189 crore in FY 2017-18 to Rs 665 crore in FY 2022-23, while EBITDA grew by 43% to Rs 212 crore in FY 2022-23 from Rs 36 crore in FY 2017-18. This remarkable growth underscores the effectiveness of Go Colours' strategic approach and disciplined execution. Meeting Mr.Gautam Saraogi highlighted to me the power of strategic focus, disciplined growth, and market adaptability. What does Quick commerce growth means for Retail landscape in years to come . ( Value vs Convenience debate) Some of my views for all #FMCG and #Consumer durables professionals, #startup entering #consumer space Blinkit management confirmed the views shared by Dmart management....that the value conscious consumer is not moving to Blinkit ( quick commerce) from brick and mortar national chains and regional chains offering personalized service. Kirana stores offering credit facilities are also not losing business.. Naturally blinkit is gaining consumers who are looking for convenience ( faster delivery ) from other ecomm platforms , emergency purchases at odd times ( correlated with 24 x 7 planning to close down) and on the go categories ( impulse categories). That's the wonder called India where different consumers need and consumers exist simultaneously and every city has its own ecosystem of consumers. In NCR also the ecosystem of consumers in gurgaon will be very different from Sonipat. Net Net space for everyone to coexist at least for the next decade . In my society itself for last 14 years one kirana store continue to exist ...and the second kirana store which opened always closed down before blinkit or after blinkit . Similarly a kirana store in market complex not even 500 m away continues to function and I see no drop in footfall .( Both of them are 500 m away from Blinkit dark store) The day they close down we would be entering a new era . #retail #distribution #consumerbuyingbehavior #quickcommerce #Dmart #regionalMT Regards

🛒ONDC Pilots Fair Price Shop Integration in Himachal Pradesh. 📦Key Points: - The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) is spearheading a pilot programme to onboard fair price shops (FPS) from Una and Hamirpur districts in Himachal Pradesh onto the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). - MicroSave, in collaboration with nStore as the technology partner, is providing support for the initiative, which aims to enhance digital access to household groceries available in FPS. 📱Programme Details: - The pilot, funded by DFPD, commenced with the first order placed on February 6 across 11 FPS, with five located in Una and six in Hamirpur districts. - The initiative seeks to extend across the entire state and eventually encompass the entire country, facilitating digital transactions for essential commodities in remote areas. 💡Impact and Expansion: - By leveraging ONDC, customers in remote regions can access groceries available in FPS through digital platforms, enhancing shop utilization and revenue. - Household essentials from kirana stores will now be accessible through FPS via ONDC, enabling purchases through apps like Paytm. 🚀Technological Integration: - Chennai metro's tech partner, Yaary, will offer seamless metro integration through ONDC, further enhancing digital access. - ONDC is witnessing increased participation from digital and tech businesses, with Tata Neu recently joining to explore online food ordering services. Reliance Retail, the powerhouse behind the JioMart Digital brand, has set its sights on delivering groceries and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) products to the doorsteps of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai residents in a mere 30-45 minutes, a move that is sure to shake things up given Reliance’s history.   The company's latest foray into the quick delivery space is a strategic move that leverages its extensive network of retail stores and partnerships with local kirana shops. By integrating this "hyperlocal delivery option" directly into the JioMart mobile application, Reliance Retail aims to provide a seamless and convenient shopping experience for its customers. The goal is to gradually reduce the delivery time from the current 30-45 minutes to 30 minutes or less as the system expands and more stores are integrated.   While the quick commerce ecosystem, dominated by players like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto, has been setting the bar high with 10-minute deliveries, Reliance Retail is taking a different approach. Rather than engaging in a frenzied race to the bottom, the company is focusing on leveraging its existing infrastructure and partnerships to provide a reliable and efficient delivery service.
