Healthcare investing is FACINATING. Bill Georges, a partner on AlleyCorp's healthcare team, jumps into his career, cool investments, founder tips, success stories, learnings and more!! Feel the excitement from the investment side! "AT THAT POINT I WAS SOLD THAT SHE WAS BUILDING SOMETHING DIFFERENCIATED." His stories are awesome! Bill shares his journey from private equity investor to healthcare executive and discusses his role at AlleyCorp. We chat about Bill's highlights with some of the successful investments he made during his time at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield and shares insights into strategic discussions and founder stories. I loved going through his investments and how they went- so much to learn! Bill Georges discusses the challenges and opportunities in the healthcare industry, particularly in the payer ecosystem. He highlights the importance of value-based care and the need for innovation in large organizations. Bill also shares insights on what he looks for in founders, how AlleyCorp sources deals, and the unique ways they support their portfolio companies. He emphasizes the significance of pattern recognition in venture capital and offers advice for founders looking to raise funds. What's something that Bill finds flawed in the payer world? Bill says its the resistance to CHANGE. My take? They just aren't incentivized to change. The risk is too high, and people aren't rewarded when they make good change. If people would be rewarded for improving clinical outcomes, and for saving money, etc. would we see more change? 🤔 Great episode of Digital Health Heavyweights Podcast tune in! https://lnkd.in/dZvciK2w

🌍 Healthcare PEs going global 🔎 A look into the landscape & some proeminent names (disclaimer: some are customers)... Healthcare investing has become a global phenomenon, and European private equity firms are at the forefront of this transformation. According to the 2023 EHIA Edition of Healthcare Investing in Europe, here's a snapshot of these developments: 🌐 Europe Landscape Firms such as Apax, Cinven, EQT Group, Nordic Capital and SV Health Investors were all founded in Europe while others such as CVC and Advent International have been more active in Europe than the US. Novo Holdings, a holding and investment company that is responsible for managing the assets and the wealth of the Novo Nordisk Foundation started in Copenhagen, then expanded into the US. 🌐 Going Global While the largest names such as Advent International, Apax, Bain, Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman and KKR have invested globally across sectors for some time, there are now larger European funds that are increasingly investing on both sides of the Atlantic like Bridgepoint, BC Partners, Cinven, CVC, EQT and Nordic Capital. Their focus on investment themes such as pharma services, HCIT, and medtech has been driving their success on a global scale. 🔍 Healthcare-Only Funds While generalist funds like Bridgepoint, Cinven, BC Partners, Blackstone, CVC, HG Capital, LLC and 3i Group plc have long dominated European healthcare, a new wave of healthcare-exclusive funds has been taking place. Based in London, France, and the Netherlands, these funds are led by industry veterans from firms like 3i (ARCHIMED, GHO Capital Partners LLP), Apax (G Square), and Nomura (Apposite Capital). They have been seeing robust deal flows and strong exit records. Private investment has a role to play in capital-intensive growth generating activities including new product or business innovation where shareholders interests are in synergy with improving health and wellness. Private investment has no role to play in established businesses where shareholders gain simply by speculating on fluctuation in a company's value or actively extract value from the company and the healthcare system. In the former, investors can serve as a source of necessary capital; in the latter, there is a net negative flow of capital from the company to shareholders.
In her new Forefront article, Jessica Andersen from Rutgers University discusses how the call to leverage private capital in health care is, on its face, enticing. However, she argues, private capital does not prioritize systemwide efficiency or patient needs. "Private capital’s growing presence in US health care sectors is part of the financialization of health services. Financialization in the hospital industry has been linked to problematic operational strategies such as aggressive mergers and acquisitions, anticompetitive behavior, and fraudulent billing. Evidence from the financialization of the US pharmaceutical sector has also demonstrated a shift in operational strategies, away from population health needs or even the long-term sustainability of companies and toward the short-term creation of shareholder or investor value."
