In honour of Men's Health Month, let's talk about healthcare access and usage among men. 🩺 Research shows that men underutilize routine and preventive health care services: men seek help 32% less frequently than women and typically only once their symptoms become severe (Kalmuss & Austrian, 2010; Springer & Mouzon, 2011; Thompson et al., 2016; Wang et al., 2013). Men who hold beliefs that "real men" are physically fit, self-reliant, and unemotional may try to endure health issues, avoid discussing health and wellbeing, and avoid seeking healthcare to help preserve their self-defined 'masculinity' (Springer & Mouzon, 2011). Healthcare underutilization may be especially prominent among men of colour and those identifying as LGBTQIA+, as these folks often face unique financial and social barriers to healthcare access. These groups may also harbor distrust towards healthcare systems due to their own and their communities' experiences of stigma and discrimination (Canuto et al., 2018; Kalmuss & Austrian, 2010, Whitehead et al., 2016, Jackson et al., 2016). Supports that resonate with mens' identities, values, and attitudes towards health and wellbeing can increase healthcare use and uptake among men. Organizations like @headsupguys, @instahim, and @menshealthfdn help connect men with supports that have meaningful, positive impacts on men’s mental and physical health. 💪 During Men's Health Month, it's crucial to break down barriers and encourage open conversations about health., particularly among those who self-identify as male By fostering environments that respect diverse identities and support individual health journeys, we can empower men to prioritize their well-being proactively. Together, let's advocate for inclusive healthcare access and promote resources that make a difference. #menshealthmonth #menshealth #mentalhealth #wellness #wellnesseducation

Did you know workplaces play an important role in women's cardiovascular health? This article makes the excellent point that heart health tips often focus on diet and nutrition but ignore social determinants of health, one aspect of which is the workplace. According to the researchers, women are at higher risk for burnout and psychological, emotional and physical stress in the workplace in comparison to their male counterparts. This is due to factors in and outside the workplace, inextricably linked to gender roles, sexism, racism, ageism and misogyny. And yet, women are routinely expected to bear this burden of responsibility individually, as they manage their stress and health risks. As the researchers point out, "Once again, these burdens are higher in equity-deserving groups, especially for women experiencing intersectional forms of discrimination, such as racism, colonialism, ableism and homophobia." The article has some solid tips to help workplaces make healthy changes. These aren't rocket science - creating psychologically healthy workplaces, offering flexible hours and flexible hybrid work options, offering comprehensive benefits, and committing to policies and procedures that combat 'isms' are really good for creating a healthy work experience for everyone. #workplacehealth #womenshealth #hearthealth

I talk with people about taking charge of their lives, living life on the edge of the next challenge, embracing the many ways to evolve, and finding fulfillment as creators & thinkers! | The Art of Living Well
In the quiet, serene hours long before dawn, ahh, the silence. Do you find this your best time to create too? I'm thinking daily on the steep climb of making change for Women’s Wellness, an issue where silence has been a roadblock. We must speak up. Why this matters… navigating the healthcare system often feels like trying to find your way through a dense, unyielding fog, like the one outside my window this morning—this sensation becomes all too real early on for women as we approach physical, hormonal changes, a time when the system's attention too often becomes dismissive. I’m reminded of my first pelvic exam and the confusion and powerlessness I felt then, and all of the times since then when I didn't have confidence that my care was enough. How do you find clarity, get your questions answered, stand your ground and advocate for your health? The act of speaking up in a healthcare setting is both an art and a crucial survival skill. From insisting on second opinions to conducting our own informed research, advocating for our health is a multifaceted endeavor. I invite you to share your experiences, tips, and triumphs. How have you ensured that your voice is heard, and your health concerns taken seriously? Your stories not only have the power to inspire but to educate and pave the way for a future where women's wellness is no longer shrouded in fog but illuminated by understanding, respect, and comprehensive care. #WomensWellness #SpeakUp

Fantastic evening dedicated to female well-being, focusing on health and wealth. Taking time for such crucial topics is always enriching. Quote of the evening, "If you go down, the whole shabang goes down with you." As women we juggle various roles at work and home, it's easy to overlook self-care and the importance of being the CEO of our own personal future. In the past 3 years, I've prioritized my overall well-being and purpose. The positive changes are evident not just to me but also to those around me. I share this because many in my network are women in their 40+s. With increased life expectancy, 40 is now considered the midpoint of life. It's vital to listen to your body's /brains cues and make necessary changes for a fulfilling journey ahead. Your holistic health plays a key role in making this long journey enjoyable and satisfying. Please do start with small changes and build on this monthly... trust me it's addictive when you start seeing incremental changes within you🤩 #FemaleWellbeing #HealthAndWealth #SelfCare #WellnessJourney https://lnkd.in/e5nt-dik

This is personal 💭😇 There are many facets to our lives, yet it's our careers that tend to dominate our thinking and doing. So I thought long and hard before sharing this on LinkedIn. I hope it speaks to you, someone in your team, or someone you love. About 'Fibroids' - a little-known, yet insidiously debilitating condition - which impacts millions of women, typically between the ages of 30 and 50. For years, I quietly struggled with *Fibroids, compounded by a previous diagnosis of *Anaemia brought on by painful *Menorrhagia. The severity of my situation was underscored when my GP, alarmed by my blood test results, urgently called me in! My journey with these conditions was long and complicated, but thank God, I eventually found the help I needed. The more I’ve talked about my experience within my professional and social circles, the more I’ve realised how many women suffer in silence, unaware of how to navigate Fibroids or the serious consequences they can lead to. As someone who designs employee policies, I feel a sense of duty to raise awareness about this issue in the workplace, normalise discussions about it, and get to solutions quickly. This is vital for the wellbeing of our colleagues, and the overall productivity of our economy. So, I’ll be in ‘good conversation’ with Dr Yinka Akinfenwa - a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (Private and NHS). Dr Yinka brings expertise in treating women from diverse backgrounds. And his office wall is covered with ‘thank you’ cards from patients. Please join us to hear my story, how Fibroids impact Women’s careers, and explore solutions. Dr Yinka will also answer as many questions during our 60-minute webinar. 🗓When: Thursday, May 30th, 2024, 7 PM to 8 PM (UK / BST). 🌐Where: Virtual (register to receive your ‘join’ link ) 🎤Host: Bella Ikpasaja, MIReg, Board Director & Org. Culture Specialist 🏥Guest: Dr Yinka Akinfenwa. Want to learn more? Check out the link, register and be part of this conversation. Today is day 4 of @jeanhailes Women’s Health Week! Today, we’re focusing on a key theme: point of difference. 🩷 Every woman's health journey is distinct, shaped by her unique experiences, genetics, lifestyle, and choices. Embracing these differences is essential for achieving true well-being. 👩⚕️ Here’s why recognising our individual differences matter: - Customised Health Solutions: Health isn’t one-size-fits-all. By understanding our specific needs and conditions, we can create health strategies tailored just for us. This personalised approach often leads to better and more sustainable results. - Empowerment Through Understanding: The more we know about our own health, the more empowered we are to make decisions that suit our personal needs. It’s about taking charge and advocating for ourselves. - Diverse Voices Enrich the Conversation: Every woman's health story adds value to the overall discussion on women’s health. By embracing our different experiences, we build a richer, more inclusive understanding and foster a supportive community. - Personalised Wellness Practices: What benefits one person might not suit another. Recognising our unique health needs helps us discover what truly supports our well-being, from diet and exercise to mental health practices and medical treatments. 🌟Today, take time to reflect on your unique health journey. Share your experiences, celebrate your individuality, and connect with others on their own paths. By appreciating our differences, we not only enhance our own health but also contribute to a more inclusive and supportive conversation about women’s health. Let’s keep learning, supporting each other, and celebrating our unique journeys throughout this week and beyond. #drlaurenhofmann #gynaecologist #obstetrician #womenshealthweek2024 #jeanhailes #uniquejourneys #celebratedifference #compassionatecare #patientexperience
