"Our patients grow not because of what we teach, but because of the space we create for their growth." – Kohut, 1977 As therapists, it’s tempting to rely on theories, frameworks, and interventions to guide us. But what truly facilitates change is the empathetic, attuned presence we bring to the therapeutic relationship. It's in our ability to attune to the patient’s emotional world, to meet them with empathy and without judgment, that healing takes place. Healing happens in the connection—when the patient feels safe enough to explore the parts of themselves they’ve hidden away. Rogers (1961) said it best: "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." Therapy is not about fixing—it’s about creating a space where patients can experience their emotions fully, where they can come face-to-face with what they’ve avoided, and in that process, discover the capacity to heal. As Fonagy (2004) reminds us, "The process of being understood is what helps patients feel safe enough to understand themselves." It’s not through solving, but through understanding and shared experience that real transformation occurs. #effectivetherapy

"Question: What do patients (sic) recall when they look back, years later, on their experience in therapy? Answer: Not insight, not the therapist’s interpretations. More often than not, they remember the positive supportive statements of their therapist." - Irvin D. Yalom, The Gift of Therapy I love this quote from Yalom's book, as a Therapist you can sometimes get caught up in thinking you need to apply complex theories or that magical intervention, yet the most impactful statements you can make are often the most simple. This quote has kept me grounded in my practice, I feel it also demonstrates that whilst therapy can be deep and intense in some cases, it also doesn't have to, to be effective. ❤️ 🎺 #therapy #counselling #mentalhealthmatters
