Mattel EMEA's #Barbie has long been a symbol of boundless possibilities, sparking inspiration in individuals of all ages to envision a future without limits. Since 1959, Barbie has encouraged dreamers to seize every opportunity that comes their way through her many roles and iterations.
Despite Barbie's huge portfolio of diverse jobs and hobbies, there is a disconnect with young people known as The Dream Gap. This is a phenomenon where young girls begin to question their potential based on gender, usually between the ages of 5 and 8. They stop believing that they can do and be anything they set their mind to and cease to see themselves in jobs that just a year before they had their heart set on.
For example, a group of 6 year olds were asked to draw what people in certain jobs looked like. In almost every scenario they showed their drawings to be mirroring themselves, i.e. girls drew girl doctors and boys drew boy teachers. Once they hit 7 years old, the girls stopped seeing themselves in those roles and started drawing male doctors - the boys still saw themselves in any role.
It's time to #CloseTheDreamGap

The Wilshire 5000 (now FT Wilshire 5000) is the original broad based US equity benchmark. In its modernised and improved form it is a better measure to identify and explain the US market risks and returns. Take another look at this iconic index series.
We are excited to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilshire 5000, now known as the FT Wilshire 5000.
When the Wilshire 5000 was launched there were few ways to understand the financial strength and performance of the entire US stock market. Quickly redefining how global investors’ view and measure the market, the Wilshire 5000 helped tell the story of American capitalism through 50 years of market cycles, economic regimes, and political administrations and ultimately helped to transform the active and passive investment landscape.
Today, we are proud to mark this important milestone and are even more excited for the next 50 years of the FT Wilshire 5000.

Today Grand Canyon National Park turns 105. Listen and learn from Native people whose ancestors inhabited what is now Grand Canyon National Park long before the park service existed, and who continue to live, work, and honor deep cultural ties here today. https://lnkd.in/e_6WajCj

As many of you will know from previous posts, I'm a huge fan of campaigns that drive home powerful messages in creative ways.
Barbie's poignant "Close the Dream Gap" advertisement is a perfect example. It's a compelling reminder to confront the stereotypes and biases that limit young girls' dreams.
As a mom to an energetic four-year-old son yet to be significantly impacted by gendered norms, I'm constantly reminded of the importance of shaping a world where both our daughters and sons believe in limitless possibilities.
So as this ad highlights, it's disheartening to know that as early as age 5, girls begin to doubt their potential to become presidents, scientists, astronauts, engineers, and CEOs. These early perceptions can profoundly impact their aspirations and future paths.
As parents, it's our responsibility to nurture an environment where both our daughters and sons feel empowered to pursue their passions without constraints.
Whether it's encouraging curiosity, providing diverse toys, championing female role models, or challenging societal norms, every action counts.
"We need to see brilliant women, being brilliant. But we can't do it alone. Mums, dads, brothers and bosses - we need all of you to help."

A powerful message and perspective. As a father to a young, talented daughter - closing the dream gap will be part of everything I do.
