While some climate philosophers like Bill Gates are considering bringing substances like #sulphur compounds into the air, global shipping has been forced to reduce sulphur in its fuels. Back in 2012, I started working for a company that prepared for the introduction of #SECA, sulphur emission controlled areas. Having had attended discussions and seminars, I always understood it was meant to improve air quality. Not climate. But sure, the influence of volcano eruptions and the impact in global temperatures had been visible to geologists. Now #NASA has concluded the results of #IMO policy of #MARPOL annex VI are now visible and unintended. It goes to show that there is nothing that can be screwed up so royally as with Global policy. https://lnkd.in/gt9YEMCv

Bernoulli’s Principle is a principle in physics that I remember very well despite learning it nearly thirty-five (35) years ago for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. “Aircraft rely on lift—an aerodynamic force generated by the interaction between a plane and the air molecules that surround it—to get airborne. But as the atmosphere warms, air expands and becomes less dense, which slows planes’ ability to become airborne, meaning they’ll need more runway space and less cargo in order to get in the air. Hence, rising surface temperatures and heat waves, it turns out, affect planes’ ability to take off”. In conclusion, climate change most definitely impacts the application of Bernoulli’s principle, ceteris paribus.

Since 2022, our Flights Footprint platform helps estimate and reduce the full climate impact of flights, considering both CO2 and non-CO2 effects. 🔍 By analyzing Amelia's flights, we've implemented contrail avoidance strategies on a contrail-sensitive city-pair, reducing 17 tons of CO2e since June 2024. This effort shows a 30-40% reduction in climate impact with minimal fuel increase. 🤝 Supported by CORAC and Direction Generale de l'Aviation Civile under France 2030, this initiative is a first in Europe in an operational context. SATAVIA has claimed significant reductions in climate-warming contrails from a range of commercial jet types during a 10-month test programme conducted last year on 65 flights operated by 12 airlines, reports Tony Harrington for GreenAir News. The UK-based company said route optimisation developed using its DECISIONX contrail software had collectively avoided over 2,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), or an average of more than 40 tonnes per flight, with minimal impact on aircraft fuel consumption or flight distances. #Contrails are formed in specific meteorological conditions which cause vapour to freeze around soot particles expelled from aircraft engines, creating cloudy canopies of ice crystals which can trap heat in the air and worsen aviation’s climate warming effects. SATAVIA’s software uses extensive atmospheric modelling data to help flight planners identify and avoid conditions in which contrails can form. #COP29 is coming to an end, and one of the points of discussion included how to tackle the effects of contrails. Is the 1.5°C target still realistic? According to a Guardian survey, just 6% of the IPCC experts believe that the average temperature level won't exceed the 1.5°C limit by 2100. The vast majority of scientists - 77% - expect a rise of at least 2.5°C. I think that even a reduction of emissions won't be enough to keep the 1.5 °C path as carbon emissions (meaning carbon dioxide) that we produce now will still remain in the atmosphere the next 300 to 1,000 years (NASA).
