Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a condition that can occur in a child whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. Few things you need to know: ➥What is FASD? Today is the third annual TFMR Awareness Day. TFMR stands for termination for medical reasons and refers to ending a wanted pregnancy for the health of the pregnant person and/or baby/ies. Like other forms of pregnancy and infant loss, TFMR involves the death of a much-loved baby and wished-for future. There are often added layers of shame, silence, and legal, political, and logistical barriers that these parents must face, often with very little support, in their grief. TFMR Awareness Day began in 2022, founded by Emma Belle of TFMR Mamas, to raise awareness of TFMR loss and bring together a vetted and credible network of TFMR-specific, affirming, and safe organizations, support spaces, and resources for TFMR parents across the globe. The date was selected to honor her daughter, Willow, who was due May 4, 2021, but was born and died via TFMR in October of 2020. Today kicks off Black Maternal Health Week and one of the ways SEMPQIC is engaged in this annual maternal health matters awareness campaign is by supporting better #mentalhealth for #moms by offering scholarships to health providers to attend Postpartum Support International's training this year. New moms are susceptible to PMAD (Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders), which are mental health issues that can occur during pregnancy, after having a baby, or during the first year after birth. PMADs are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, affecting at least 1 in 5 women and birthing people during pregnancy and postpartum Positive mental health for new moms is critical for her mindset and care for the new baby! #BMHW24 #HRSAhelpsMoms

The Parent-Infant Research Institute is conducting the Beating the Blues before Birth (BBB) study, a government-funded project evaluating a treatment for depression during pregnancy. Up to 1 in 7 women experience depression during pregnancy. The BBB study offers them a chance to participate in CBT therapy, a proven method to improve mood, manage stress, and navigate pregnancy challenges. The Star Tribune published another article this morning focused on how Minnesota addresses the needs of parents with substance use addiction. Specifically, the article covers prenatal substance use, mandated reporting laws and implementation, family treatment programs, and home-visitng. The article also discusses Minnesota's new state Task Force on Pregnancy, Health and Substance Use Disorder (TFPSUD). https://lnkd.in/gHNG6DxA

A clinical trial in Pakistan, funded by NIH, found that a non-specialist administered intervention significantly reduced postpartum anxiety and depression in women. The intervention, Happy Mother-Healthy Baby, involved cognitive behavioral therapy sessions during pregnancy.
