On Overdose Awareness Day, we join hands to remember those we've lost to drug overdose, and to stand by those who are struggling. The burden of stigma persists for many battling substance use, or who have experienced the loss of a close family member or friend due to overdose. Overdose remains the leading cause of death among individuals aged 18 to 45 in the United States today. We have seen a record rise in drug-realted deaths, with the US losing 109,680 people to overdose in 2022. This staggering number is more than just a statistic; it represents people within our circles—our children, siblings, parents, grandparents, extended family, and friends. For countless individuals, August 31 marks an occasion to openly share their grief without judgment. International Overdose Awareness Day brings to light the complexities of substance use disorders (SUDs) and overdose-related fatalities, granting the space for people to mourn in their own way, free from the weight of stigma. Let's raise awareness, break the stigma, and offer support to individuals and families affected by this crisis. Together, we can create a compassionate and understanding community that prioritizes mental health and substance use recovery. #overdoseawarnessday #stigma #mentalhealth
