Bridging the gap between teaching and learning: that's the challenge Persida Himmele and William Himmele tackle head-on for new educators. Many novice teachers have misconceptions about effective instruction. These strategies shift the focus from "What am I teaching?" to "What are my students actually learning?"—connecting lessons to real-time evidence of engagement and understanding. Here’s how to help new teachers get a truer picture of what works: https://lnkd.in/evUg6Fnf #TeacherDevelopment #EffectiveInstruction #StudentEngagement

In reflecting on the challenges within our education system—a system many of us acknowledge is failing to meet the diverse needs of our children—I am reminded of a powerful example from my son's experience in grade 6. His teacher, understanding deeply how children learn and thrive, implemented a strategy where good performance in one class would earn students outdoor playtime during the next class. This not only boosted their academic performance but also their enthusiasm and overall well-being. Sadly, the initiative was short-lived; halted by other staff who felt it broke the conventional "rules" of classroom management. This story illustrates a critical barrier in educational reform: the lack of autonomy granted to innovative teachers. Our system often confines educators, restricting their ability to apply research and explore effective strategies that support both the academic performance and holistic health of students. It's evident that if we wish to transform our education system, we must begin by empowering those on the front lines. Teachers need the freedom to experiment and apply their insights into what works best for their students without being constrained by outdated rules and norms. Let’s advocate for an educational environment that values holistic well-being and encourages innovation that goes beyond traditional methods. Only then can we truly foster a system that adapts to the changing needs of our students and prepares them for a vibrant future. It's time to rethink the rules and prioritize human-centric, adaptable learning spaces that reflect commonsense and visible results. #EducationReform #LearnerCentered #TeacherAutonomy #InnovativeTeaching #FutureOfEducation

Super interesting article: how can we create schools that act as community learning spaces, where learning doesn't have to be suspended if a teacher is sick... "Teacher absences are so disruptive because most schools and school systems still rely on one teacher instructing one classroom of students, and that one teacher is responsible for everything—from planning to instructional delivery to grading to following up with students when they are behind. Expanding the teacher role to a team of adults with shared responsibility for the learning in a particular grade level or subject area would help make one educator’s absence far less disruptive."
