After three glorious mornings watching the Perseid meteor shower barefoot on the lawn at 3am while doing some form of energy work, and three morning sprint rounds per week (with two days in-between for recovery) this summer in a nice park with old trees and with some barefoot walking on the public lawn (twelve sprints before the heat arrives) and daily rounds with my 10kg resistance Nordic walking poles and delicious home-made food, I'm now travelling to a conference venue abroad where I'll be chairing an advisory board for regional innovation in an interesting area of technology. So I decided to use these three days as a welcome opportunity for some fasting induced autophagy for about 72 hours, in addition to my daily 16 to 20 hours of intermittent fasting. I've found both a valuable addition to my lifestyle choices. and yes, I expect I won't be served adequate food 'there'. - it is critical to keep up to date with the latest knowledge and not with mis-framed negativity loaded so-called science writing The sixty-year-old cohort should be prepared to live another healthy sixty years. do playfully explore ways to #resist_smarter and make the better lifestyle choices Earlier this summer I revealed that my latest trace is myokines - messengers produced by muscles during exercise. When muscles are contracted, myokines, a group of peptides, are released from the working muscle tissue. These myokines have anti-inflammatory properties and contribute to a healthy immune system, among other benefits. In 1976, Peter Berg shared "Amble to Towards Continent Congress". A call for ecologically minded citizens to re-envision what a continental congress could mean in the wake of the pro-patriotic fervor of the United States bi-centennial celebrations. What emerged, was a framework, and a basis for bioregional congresses, the first that would take place in the Ozarks in 1979, followed by the first North American Bioregional Congress in 1984. "All human beings have a common identity. We are a single species on this planet. Our species history stretches back millions of years, long enough to have exerted an active force in the development of the whole biosphere - certainly the most active recent force since the last Ice Age. All species share the planet interdependently. We ultimately depend on all others for our existence. Both for food and for illumination. Spirit and survival species-to-species are essentially connected. Our species is still learning from the others: silent conversations of plants, controlled conception among wolves and deer, the sensitive social order without coercion that turns a flock of birds or school of fish. This is our circle of the possible. Globalism, monoculture, and displacement (human beings bereft of their own and other species) are fatal. They are at the truncated tip of the impossible. There needs to be a Continent Congress so that occupants of North American can finally become inhabitants and find out where they are. This time congress is a verb. Congress, come together. Come together with the continent. Continent congress isn't a simple exercise. It's an enormous effort to overcome the politics of extinction, the Earth-colonist globalism which exhausts whole continents, their peoples, and moves now to devastate deep floors of our planetary oceans. This piece was distributed with Planet Drum’s Continent Congress Bundle, and was written to counter the patriotic fervor of the US Bicentennial in 1976. It was updated and reprinted as a “surprise publication” for Planet Drum Members in 1992, and served as a bioregional overview of North American history leading up to the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ landing in the Western Hemisphere. A two-sided 11″ x 17″ calligraphy-ed poster that includes Dasmann and Udvardy’s 1974 map of the biotic provinces of North America. 4 COMMITMENTS Our transdisciplinary and multi-dimensional approach is supported by a scientific evidence base. It is also underpinned by a social movement. As stewards of our shared home, we gather physically and virtually at Sunway University in Malaysia to reaffirm our commitment to Planetary Health. Building upon the principles and call to action set forth in the 2021 São Paulo Declaration on Planetary Health1, we are accelerating our ambition to bring Planetary Health to all sectors of society and the public. We commit our movement to: Stand on the shoulders of the foundational São Paulo Declaration, which eloquently articulates the nexus between human health, environmental sustainability, and social equity, and, recognising the imperative it sets forth — to move the many and varied stakeholder groups from evidence to action — to carry this work forward. Renew our efforts working at all levels with all stakeholders to apply the growing evidence base to propose and develop solutions that will allow humanity and the natural systems we depend on to thrive now and in the future. This includes supporting the United Nations and its Member States in charting a planetary health-informed pathway for the successor arrangements to the 2030 Agenda and Goals. Maintain a sharp focus on human health and well-being, recognising that the boundaries between humans and all life with which we share this planet are interwoven and consequently harming our natural systems harms ourselves and future generations. Use the Planetary Health Roadmap prepared for, and launched in this meeting, to support furthering the reach and ambition of the Planetary Health movement. Accelerate efforts to achieve these commitments by ensuring that research and evidence generation respond to and are aligned with the Roadmap’s Action Plan. Develop and disseminate clear communications to all stakeholders, utilising a mix of wide-reaching media, articulating what needs to be done to co-create the ‘great transition’; a comprehensive shift in how we live and interact with each other and Nature. CALL TO ACTION These commitments signify our determination to actively implement measures that advance Planetary Health. Acknowledging the urgency emphasised by the São Paulo Declaration and reinforced during this Summit, we pledge to expedite the implementation of initiatives outlined in the Roadmap and call on others to join us in doing so. The challenges we face demand prompt, decisive action, and we stand united in our resolve to contribute to a resilient and regenerative future.
