Check out thermal fluid specialist Tim Powell's recent article in Process Engineering Control & Manufacturing. Tim explores how effective health and safety protocols can contribute to a safer and more efficient work environment when working with heat transfer systems. Thermal fluids can safely maintain high temperatures at relatively low pressures and can be tailored to applications. Stable for both heating and cooling applications, they can range in temperature from -90°C to 600°C. Knowing how to manage risk and maintain safe heat transfer systems can result in years of efficient production and thermal fluid longevity. Velocity for O2 and H2 lines Oxygen is byproduct of green hydrogen plants (electrolysis of water for H2 production). Velocity criteria for O2 stream in the pipe depend on piping system and pressure. there are two categories for maximum velocity. impingement velocity and non-impingement velocity. for establishing the maximum velocity inside the line, piping model should be checked for impingement sites. maximum impingement velocity is 100 ft/s for pressure lower than 225 psia and would be reduced by increasing the pressure. maximum non-impingement velocity is 200 ft/s for pressure lower than 225 psia impingement velocity curve and non-impingement velocity curve should be used for higher pressure. during developing process design criteria for the project, dedicated criteria for O2 byproduct should be considered. for H2 product, specifically during flare network design the Mach number criteria should be checked. in general for main flare header Mach number up to 0.8 or 0.7 is accepted. for H2, sound velocity could be higher than 1000 m/s and therefore high Mach number could cause acoustic vibration.
