The overcapacity in Trucking can be partly attributed to the flood of equipment entering (and re-entering) the market. Many short-sighted decisions to chase the unnatural COVID-era rates may finally be working itself out of the market in 2025-2026. Used truck inventory should continue to grow as companies dispose of unsustainably priced equipment acquired during the rush, resulting in excess inventory in Used Truck divisions of larger leasing companies and stand-alone dealerships. M&A's may also continue to be popular as companies explore options to sell off parts (or all) of their business instead of filing for bankruptcy. The formula for a more stable market is coming together, but the result is still hazy. “Despite greater optimism over the outlook, more carriers expressed an intent to leave the business than in our prior survey,” said Lee Klaskow, senior freight transportation and logistics analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. “An acceleration in carrier exits could speed up the market’s return to equilibrium and provide a better backdrop for rates next year.”
