How do you sell battery-electric big rigs if nobody wants to buy them? That's the quandary facing heavy-duty truck manufacturers and dealers in California (🔐 read for free) scrambling to comply with shifting regulations brought about by the change of administration in Washington. Trucking industry officials say battery-electric trucks just aren't popular with truckers. They are too expensive to buy, don't have a long enough driving range and charging infrastructure is practically non-existent. Truck makers are being compelled by California regulators to sell a growing number of zero-emissions vehicles. But regulators also this month dropped a requirement that trucking companies buy zero-emissions vehicles, citing anticipated opposition from the Trump administration. That decision undid a key pillar of California's multipronged effort to create a commercial market for zero-emissions trucks. And it has put truck manufacturers in a bind. “Customers aren’t going to lean into something they don’t have the ability to charge,” said John O'Leary, chief executive of Daimler Truck North America. But “we have to convince someone to buy electric trucks that they may not otherwise want.” https://lnkd.in/eMYSKn4C

Daimler Truck North America will resume taking orders for diesel trucks and buses in Oregon after halting sales in late December, the company said Jan. 13. DTNA, which manufactures Freightliner and Western Star Trucks and Thomas Built Buses, stopped accepting orders as a result of the state’s implementation of emissions-reduction laws that mirror California’s Advanced Clean Trucks rule. Credit reporting requirements led DTNA to take the drastic step. State of California counts sales based off zero-emission vehicle sales codes, while State of Oregon Department of Environmental Quality staff said it would be using registrations through the state Department of Transportation’s Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division. Recall Notice: Paccar has issued a recall for nearly 3,900 medium- and heavy-duty trucks due to a steering issue that poses safety risks. 🚨 Affected vehicles, including 2025 model year Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks, may have tie rod or drag link assemblies with ball studs out of hardness specification. Owners of affected trucks are advised not to drive them until the necessary repairs are completed. There have been no reported warranty claims, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue as of June 6, 2024. Dealers will inspect and replace the affected assemblies free of charge. 🚨 Upcoming Changes to GB Type Approval for Rigid Chassis Vehicles 🚨 From January 2025, rigid chassis vehicles designated with EU type approval can no longer be reclassified as GB type-approved. Instead, these vehicles will require an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) to meet GB standards. This change introduces additional costs for offsite inspections and administrative processes. It's crucial for truck dealerships to order chassis with the correct type approval designation to avoid delays and unexpected expenses. At Don-Bur, we’re committed to supporting our customers through this transition. 📖 Learn more about this critical update and its implications: https://lnkd.in/ehQBQyjE #GBTypeApproval #RegulationsUpdate #TransportSolutions
