The total mangrove area of Sri Lanka is spread over an area of 10,000 hectares and twenty-three rare species of plants exist in the 52-hectare area of the Madugaga mangroves. A fact that can be specially mentioned is that about twenty-five of the above-mentioned Shakyas are located in the vicinity of this Madu River. What is more important is the presence of a plant unique to the Madu River that is not found in other mangroves. It is called Ratmilla and this plant is not found anywhere else. This plant is said to be more than hundred years old by the villagers living there. One thing that should be said here is that there are about 50 such plants around the Madu River. Protecting them should be the responsibility of environmentalists as well as everyone else. .
Other rivers start from the mountains and flow downwards, but the Madu River is quite different. Because this starts from the lower part of the country. Although the rivers that start from the mountains go to certain parts of the country and finally join the ocean, it can be seen that it starts from the lower part of the country and starts its journey of about five to six kilometers and joins the sea. Due to the existing biodiversity as well as the value, the ecosystem around the Madu River was named as Ramsa Wetland. This is the third Ramsa wetland to be named in Sri Lanka and there are several Ramsa wetlands in Sri Lanka. Apart from the Madu Ganga Sanctuary, Anawilundawa, Kumana National Park, Wan Kalo and Bundala National Park. Ramsa Wetlands is a convention adopted in 1971 by 18 countries to conserve wetlands in the world. These protected wetlands are known as Ramsa Wetlands. Designated as a Tourism Promotion Zone in 2002, it was designated as a Ramsa Wetland in 2003 and a Sanctuary in 2006.
When I went to visit the Madu River, I was not interested in looking for details related to it, but because of the beauty and the value of the mangrove ecosystem, I was curious to find information about it.
Among the rivers in Sri Lanka, if one asks which river has the largest number of islands, many people will doubtless answer. But when we searched for the details of the Madu River, we were also able to hear many details from the ancients there. In the past, there were more than 50 islands near the Madu River, and the legend says that there were more than 60. Environmentalists attribute the mesa's large number of islands to past tectonic activity. But unfortunately today we see very few islands. click to watch.
