Political Officer at @ifaw EU/BE. I work on EU policies related to marine conservation, maritime transport, wildlife crime, SDGs, and biodiversity.
❗ EU Member States are set to miss targets to protect 30% of EU seas by 2030 ❗ EU countries are also far behind in achieving their commitment to strictly protect 10% of European seas by 2030. Faced with the dual biodiversity and climate crises, the European Commission cannot ignore this alarm signal and must take firmer action for the EU to meet its biodiversity targets and remain credible internationally vis-à-vis the recently adopted UN Global Biodiversity Framework. This year's theme International Day of Biodiversity 2024 is "Part of the Plan" — a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the dangerous decline in nature by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. While the targets for 30 percent of nature to be protected and 30 percent of degraded ecosystems to be restored by 2030 are global, a company can apply the concept to its planet-forward strategy using its nature footprint (similar to what is done for climate aims and carbon footprints) to guide the planning and investment. Learn more by clicking through the link to Pure Strategies, Inc. below.
The relationship between climate and nature is complex and interconnected. The success of climate strategies is closely linked to the success of nature strategies, and the success of nature strategies is connected to the success of climate strategies. Today, on the International Day of Biodiversity, we put the spotlight on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, approved by UN Biodiversity in December. This framework sets out ambitious goals to be achieved by 2030, addressing the biodiversity crisis and promoting sustainable development. Amongst 23 specific targets, the aim is to conserve 30% of land, sea and inland waters, and to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems. Achieving these targets by 2030 is crucial for halting biodiversity loss and ensuring the well-being of future generations. 🌿 Biodiversity has long been a cornerstone of the EU legislative agenda. However, powerful lobbies are now attempting to depict it as a hindrance to food and energy security🛑 ⏸ Calls for a 'pause' in environmental action risk pushing both nature and our economies to the brink. We urge EU leaders to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution by reinforcing the European Green Deal for a Nature-Positive Europe by 2030🌍 These proposals from the European Habitats Forum aim to make nature great again 💚 📄 👉 https://lnkd.in/g63KWJtR

This report, published by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Oliver Wyman, highlights the pivotal role of cities in leading the global fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. Coordinated city action for nature is not only vital to achieving the goals set by the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), but also strategically necessary given the climate-, health- and infrastructure-related urban challenges arising from existing unbalanced relationships with nature and the biosphere.

UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28. IUCN President. Global leader and advocate for climate and nature.
On this International Day for Biological Diversity, we recognize the crucial role each of us plays in protecting our planet's incredible biodiversity. This year, the theme "Be Part of the Plan" serves as a reminder that we all have a responsibility to safeguard nature. In my remarks, I discuss how the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework provides a bold vision for protecting 30% of all nations' land and marine ecosystems. COP28 further underscored the vital link between climate action and nature conservation, emphasizing that our climate goals depend on the health of our ecosystems. I encourage everyone—governments, private sectors, civil society, and individuals alike—to integrate biodiversity conservation into climate strategies. Let's come together as a united global community to build a sustainable and equitable future. #InternationalDayforBiologicalDiversity #BePartofthePlan #Biodiversity #ClimateAction

A recent study published in the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) unveils startling revelations: Global biodiversity has declined by as much as 11% during the 20th century due to land-use change. However, potential further declines are looming due to climate change, as climate change could exacerbate the situation further. The report notes: “While land-use change remains relevant, climate change could become the most important driver of biodiversity loss by mid-century. The researchers assessed three widely-used scenarios – from a sustainable development to a high emissions scenario. For all scenarios, the impacts of land-use change and climate change combined result in biodiversity loss in all world regions.” Learn more about the findings and their implications at this link: https://bit.ly/44tTUxW #BiodiversityLoss #ClimateChange

Local communities advance climate solutions through active participation. During the International Congress on Climate Variability and Change, BioCarbon Standard's applicability was highlighted, along with guidelines for public consultations that allow communities to engage directly in its programs. The collaboration with standards like the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) was also emphasized, particularly for their work in standardizing biodiversity metrics. This alignment strengthens the Biodiversity Program as a nature-based solution to reduce climate risks and build resilience.
