Dive into an essential element of literacy: the role of encoding. In this latest podcast episode, I talk with the great Cheryl Lundy Swift about the real struggles teachers face in the reading conversation, uncovering why students aren't progressing as expected in encoding compared to decoding. But fear not, because I've got the inside scoop on the most groundbreaking research to craft effective spelling instruction that yields results! And here's the kicker: I'm not just talking theory—I'm out there in the trenches of real classrooms, with real kids, trying to make a difference every day. But the real magic happens when Logan, one of my students, puts me in my place and teaches me a lesson on spelling intervention. Trust me, you won't want to miss this powerful story! I hope you will join the conversation and share your insights! As Semester One soon comes to a close, and as we look toward Semester Two, this podcast conversation offers an excellent reminder of the priorities when planning any unit of work. With the inherent time constraints in education, we are often consumed by simply being prepared for the week ahead. Hence, we typically plan sequentially, beginning at week one and then two, and so forth. Typically always, however, only thinking one week ahead at a time. By adopting a UBD approach to planning, our strategic thinking begins at week ten and works backward. To this end, we start by determining what the essential skills and essential knowledge are for the unit of work, and then backwards map to week one to ensure that we are effectively allowing for skill and content development.
Improving teaching effectiveness and student outcomes through research-based instructional coaching and professional development worldwide.
"Teacher clarity about the goals towards their teaching is a highly significant variable in student learning; and UBD, if anything, promotes goal clarity in stage one." This Wednesday, I'm joined by my friend Jay McTighe, co-author of Understanding By Design (UBD). We explore practical strategies for implementing UBD, including the role of instructional coaches in supporting teachers. Please rate & review the podcast: https://ow.ly/ISiq50RGm8y
