Happy Cinco de Mayo to all my connections! What Is Cinco de Mayo? Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated on May 5 in parts of Mexico and the United States. The day commemorates the victory of the outnumbered Mexican army over the French army at the 1862 Battle of Puebla during the Second Franco-Mexican War. Contrary to popular opinion, Cinco de Mayo is not a celebration of Mexico’s independence. The actual Mexican Independence Day falls on Sept. 16 and celebrates the ‘Cry of Dolores’, the call to arms that launched the Mexican War of Independence. Today in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is actually a relatively minor holiday, according to History.com. It’s mainly celebrated in the state of Puebla, where the battle occurred, but other parts of the country do not typically mark the day in any major way. In the United States, on the other hand, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a more widespread celebration of Mexican culture and traditions. Cities around the U.S. celebrate the holiday with events highlighting traditional Mexican dancing, music and cuisine.

In September, I have been invited by UNESCO and the Scientific and Education Council use Slavic oral memory rituals and traditions- my extensive work with #koloinformedtrauma in #Bosnia. My exploration into this field is detailed in my recent textbook, "South Slavic Women’s Transgenerational Trauma Healing through Oral Memory Practices: Women War Crimes and War Survivors." This work introduces Kolo-Informed Trauma Treatment as a multifaceted approach that integrates clinical, cultural, psychological, and neurobiological methodologies with the UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage of the South Slavic Kolo circle movement and somatic folk dance. This innovative treatment method challenges the misconception that Slavic oral memory practices are obsolete in trauma healing. Instead, it highlights the untapped potential and depth of female indigenous knowledge, demonstrating its relevance across various scientific disciplines and advocating for women's human rights. At the heart of Kolo-Informed Trauma Treatment, the critical role of women's cultural #memory and somatic oral traditions is emphasized to foster communal healing. The narrative of women’s memory, deeply ingrained in the South Slavic culture, offers powerful communal strategies to address and mitigate the impacts of war trauma, charting a course toward #thriving- well-being, not resiliency, since resiliency informs survivors that the violence is continuous and ongoing. and well-being. By redefining the value and role of women within these healing practices, we can envision a global application of these methodologies, promoting a more inclusive and balanced societal equilibrium. This book and its underlying research advocate for recognizing and harnessing the power of women's collective experiences and healing practices in the Balkans as a universal model for trauma recovery and cultural rejuvenation. https://lnkd.in/g4pK-3zT #music #culturalheritage #music #sevdalinka
Officials in #Bosnia-#Herzegovina are campaigning to have #sevdalinka, a traditional genre of folk music, added to #UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage by the end of this year. Musicians and listeners say the often mournful songs touch an emotional chord for them -- and represent a unifying element of #Bosnian culture. https://lnkd.in/g_QtWsu7

Every year on May 5th, the world celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta of tacos, margaritas, and mariachi music. However, there's a deeper story to discover! Beyond the fiesta, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, where a smaller Mexican army defied the odds and defeated a much larger French force. This victory became a symbol of Mexican resilience and national pride. Cinco de Mayo is also a celebration of Mexico's rich heritage. Utilize this day to explore the vibrant tapestry of Mexican culture, take the time to listen to the rich sounds of traditional music genres like Son Jarocho and Banda Sinaloense. Mexico's cultural tapestry is vast, with its many artists including the artistic brilliance of Mexican muralism, like the works of Diego Rivera. Step back in time and marvel at the architectural wonders of the Mayan civilization, like the ruins of Chichen Itza. Did you know The Maya, whose civilization thrived in southern Mexico and Central America, are considered the first people in the Americas to develop the concept of zero? Their ingenious vigesimal (base-20) system used a dot or shell symbol to represent the absence of a value, a crucial innovation that laid the foundation for complex mathematical calculations. #CincoDeMayo #MexicanCulture #LinkedIn
