Having our lab right here at home in New York City gives us the ability to efficiently develop new ingredients, allowing us to quickly respond to market demands and consumer needs. We love opening our door to the community - check out our time with Seema Kumar, CEO at Cure.
It’s been a while since I donned a lab coat and safety goggles and walked into a lab. The last time I was in a lab was in February 2020 to visit my then scientist colleagues in Leiden, Netherlands, who were working on a vaccine for a novel coronavirus poised to take the world into its disastrous grip. So I was delighted last week to tour the labs at Helaina, a biotech company right here at Cure. in NYC, and the first to bring the magical #immunity properties of #breast #milk to food that can benefit humans at all stages of life, from enhanced #infant formula to #elderly care nutrition. I spent time talking to Helaina’s #CEO and food scientist Laura Katz, explored her #labs, and in our #TuesdayTalk, learned how Helaina’s #technologyplatform replicates functional #proteins found in the human body, including breast milk, and makes them available as new #nutrients in formulas, shakes, gummies and more. Their first product EFFERA, made using precision fermentation, is the first human #lactoferrin for #food and #supplements. The powder is ironically #pink in color (due to the ferrin, or iron, in it) and is a serendipitous nod to the #powerofwomen, the #magic of #breastmilk, and the #femalefounder who followed her #heart, exercised her #businessacumen and channeled her #outrage at the #blackmarket for breast milk, by founding the #company that is Helaina today.
