I've just finished listening to John Englander's "Moving to Higher Ground: Rising Sea Level and the Path Forward". It is clearly written (and well narrated), accessible to a general audience with deeper dives for public policy, planning and infrastructure management folks, and offers profound reflections on climate adaptation challenges and opportunities relevant to other contexts. Two questions will stay with me for every coastline I visit - what is the shape of the coast in this place in 2200, and what see level rise does the current planning assume? https://lnkd.in/gGzUu_Gf

George Woodwell was among the first scientists to sound the alarm on climate change, long before the term entered the public conversation. In the 1980s he founded the Woods Hole Research Center, which was later renamed Woodwell Climate Research Center. The work of Woodwell, who died in June at the age of 95, resonated around the world. Few knew him as well as Richard "Skee" Houghton, whom Woodwell hired in 1966. Houghton is senior scientist emeritus at Woodwell Climate Research Center, and has served as its acting director and president. Reposting for greater reach. This was a timely symposium, especially for those who are technically inclined and interested in the science of climate change. Another positive aspect of the workshop was the interdisciplinary nature of the discussions, which brought together related issues from public health, energy, and agriculture. It was a great space for learning about the trends in climate science from the perspective of U.S. researchers. Some of the amazing topics were: - Rare event simulations and machine learning. - Oceanic heat waves. - Measuring and modeling physiologically relevant urban heat. - Mental health and air temperature. - Simulating adaptation of urban climates to future extreme heat - And so on. Additionally, I learned that the Red Cross has a group of people working on topics related to heat waves, and that there are cooling centers for extreme heat relief in Hong Kong and Waterloo (Ontario).

Thoughtful Everglades Restoration is critical to South Florida’s resilience to increasing climate impacts in the coming decades. We loved attending the Climate Cafe Series at University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science moderated by @Jenny Staletovich from WLRN Public Media where we heard from Curtis Osceola about the impact of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). Some of our key takeaways: - Everglades restoration should address the problems of the future, not just to correct for the mistakes of the past. - We have to listen to the people who live in the environments they steward and protect.

Higher education can play a crucial role in addressing climate change. This new report has some good recommendations for federal, state and local policy makers, philanthropy, business, and of course higher ed itself on how to catalyze and scale climate action
