Retention is a measure of potential ecosystem stickiness... This can result from several factors, with the three strongest being: • Quality of community • Availability of useful consumer apps • User experience/ease of use Ecosystem and user experience are key for game studios when choosing a chain, so retention data is crucial. We measured how well ecosystems retain users in the first week. We see a big difference between chains with the most users and those with the best retention. Interestingly, we see a massive spike in retention on Base to 0.6 (i.e. in August '23, approximately 60% of users were retained after the first week of account creation). This retention spike is strongly linked to the launch of the viral social app, Friend Tech. It highlights the viral and lasting impact of social network effects on the use of underlying infrastructure. Excluding the Friend Tech-related outlier numbers, Arbitrum, Base, Avax, and BSC have shown consistently strong retention rates. These are all ecosystems with strong gaming communities, and it’s clear why. They are all: • Consumer- and scalability-focused; • Have low transaction costs; • And high TPS. These numbers generally vary widely, ranging from as low as 5% during volatile market conditions to a peak of around 35-40% retention.
