20 Years and Beyond: A Legacy of Safety First     This year marks 20 years since a defining moment in NSW transport history: the establishment of the Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI). Born in the wake of the tragic Waterfall rail accident, OTSI's journey is a testament to the unwavering commitment to making every rail, bus and ferry trip a safe one.     The 2003 Waterfall tragedy led to a Special Commission of Inquiry and the establishment of OTSI in the following year, initially as part of the Independent Transport Safety and Reliability Regulator (ITSRR). OTSI’s mission: to improve safety by investigating and reporting on rail, bus, and ferry incidents with rigor and impartiality.     The NSW Parliament recognised the need for OTSI to have complete independence. The Transport Legislation Amendment Act 2005 established the Chief Investigator as a statutory role reporting directly to the Minister for Transport. This vital separation guaranteed fairness, balance, and transparency in every investigation.  Over two decades OTSI has completed 235 ‘no-blame’ investigations and shared thousands of safety lessons to support operators, regulators and other stakeholders to improve the safety of our transport networks.      Looking Ahead: Building on a Firm Foundation     As we celebrate 20 years, we reaffirm our commitment to our mission and values. The TRSA | Association for Linen, Uniform and Facility Services Industry Fleet Safety Summit, part of the NAFA Fleet Management Association Institute and Expo, featured a panel including TRSA CEO Joseph Ricci, Alexander Greenman, Michael Halter, MS, CSP, CPCU our very own Judie Nuskey, and Donald Bock, Seabright Safety Solutions. It focused on fleet safety within the linen, uniform, and facility services industry. This panel featured real-life case scenarios illustrating situational safety procedures, as elucidated by Alex, along with their implementation at ImageFirst. During the presentation, Mike showcased real-time, in-cab accidents, offering explanations for the crashes, insights into risk management, discussions on escalating insurance costs, and strategies for averting nuclear verdicts to safeguard your organization. Don reviewed safety checklists, and what to do when a crash happens. Judie outlined a multi-faceted approach that combines education, incentives, regulatory support, leadership engagement, and ongoing support, that encourage companies to take action and prioritize driver safety as a core component of their operations. Interactive slides were viewed with attendees that discussed the importance of what muscle memory is and how it applies to driving. Hobart is currently hosting over 600 road safety professionals, researchers, and academics from across the globe as they attend the annual Australasian Road Safety Conference.   The conference aims to shape the future of road safety across Australasia by providing a platform for the best minds to share and explore the latest developments and innovations aimed at reducing road fatalities and serious injuries.   The theme for the conference this year is, 'Target 2030: What's the pathway forward?', which coincides with Tasmania's goal of reducing the number of fatalities on Australian roads by 50 per cent and serious injuries by 30 per cent by 2030.   Eric Abetz, Minister for Transport, said, "Approximately 300 people are seriously injured or killed on Tasmanian roads each year, and while this is an 80 per cent reduction from over 50 years ago, there is still more to do."   "Hosting the ARSC is a fantastic opportunity for Tasmania to hear from experts in the field, as well as showcasing our support for reducing road trauma through research, investment, programs, and technological advancement."
