A common misunderstanding exists about billing for out-of-network therapy, especially in relation to Medicare. Some people believe that being a non-participating provider with Medicare means that they are not in Medicare's network and therefore can charge Medicare patients cash directly. This is incorrect. Being a non-participating provider means you are still enrolled with Medicare, but you have the option to receive additional payment compared to participating providers. We’ve often written about the battle being fought around site-of-care. As we’ve suggested previously, it comes down to one word….. MONEY. Payers have been turning up the flame under the pot in which the battle is being fought. They are increasingly looking to move in more aggressive ways to redirect patinets away from comparatively very expensive hospital outpatient departments and into alternate site of care. Inpatient revenue rose 3.7% versus March 2023, while outpatient revenue was up 2.4% year-over-year. Overall gross operating revenue increased 3.1% and 2.2% over the same periods, respectively."
