Crazy Idea: What if we had high school students/graduates pay businesses to become skilled? So, instead of having university co-ops, the student pays a plumber/digital agency/copywriter, etc., to learn hands-on. Traditionally, the co-op was for "blue collar" professions - plumbers, electricians, carpenters etc. But I see the digital marketing world as the new "blue collar." Everyone must learn digital marketing, with personal branding being the new marketing strategy. High school students do not go to university/college (unless they want to learn a profession - Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer, etc.) They pay businesses to learn. Why not let them learn for free, like the Co-op model? Because it keeps accountability on both sides. Paying $50K to become a web designer is ridiculous. Or to become a digital marketer. What if a student paid $10k to become one? Fewer student loans, more productive members of society. I would probably hire a young adult who has one year of working at an ad agency rather than a recent graduate from university. Businesses want people who have experience and knowledge. The concept of a university is not designed to employ people unless they're going for a career in the above-mentioned fields. It's become an economic juggernaut. We live in a time where education is ubiquitous. Learning a skill is rampant. You can learn for free from many professions that "require" a degree. However, getting experience? That only comes with being in the fire. So that's my idea.

Here are 3 mistakes I see on entry-level engineering resumes: 1) You put down your GPA ❌ If your GPA is less than 3.8/4, don't put it down. ✔ If your GPA is more than 3.8, you can put it down. Honestly, most people don't care. You'll find that grad programs are the ones that care. Other than that, I can't think of a reason it matters. If you don't have any other experience, you could potentially use this to highlight your University experience. 2) You include your job at "FAST FOOD OR RETAIL" ❌ If your experience here is not relevant to your target company, take this off. ✔ If it somehow creates a strong bullet point(s) for your application, keep it. Your resume doesn't have a lot of room on it. If you have no other experience and you're having a hard time filling up a resume, I guess you can keep this, but you'll "likely" be better off putting down classroom/personal project experiences over flipping burgers (for an engineering applicant). That being said, I can think of a handful of cases you would want to include this on your resume. 3) You don't know how to format a resume, so you just throw text into MS Word. ❌ Please don't make the font tiny, or just cram the page full of text. No one wants to read a wall of text. Also, no need to make it super fancy. ✔ Please use a font (12-14), and use a classy font. No comic sans or papyrus. Also, please make use of white space. Put your important info near the top. This will be the part of the resume that is read the most often. Also, put your most compelling bullet points first. Please make sure your resume is skimmable and has relevant and useful information in it. Also, don't try and get too fancy to "stick out" in a sea of resumes. If you need any help with your resume, DM me. We can do a quick breakdown together.

As Indeed usually sends useless hiring ads, even if I have set certain filters for my saved job alert, I just received a funny one. It is a manufacturing operator role. After saying how the company has a high number of employees and a 300M yearly profit, the funny part begins: You will have the following tasks: - Cutting and machining aluminum profiles - Cutting and welding PVC/fiberglass fabric - Fitting and assembling sub-assemblies - Quality control and operation of blinds - Reading assembly plans - Carry out self-checking of manufacturing stages - Fill in documents relating to production monitoring - Provide feedback on problems encountered and contribute to the analysis - Comply with the manufacturing procedures developed by the methods department. Working conditions - Standing for long hours - Regularly carrying loads of up to 25 kg - Working in a production workshop: ambient temperature summer/winter Permanent contract. Shift working schedule: 6AM - 15:45 or 14h30 - 22h30. Besides the (obvious) CV, they also demand a cover letter for this role, which is paid...drumroll....with 1700 euros TOPS. A cover letter??? I don't know who could/would lie about dreaming to get such a job... I am pretty sure that in a couple of months, this position will end up on a certain freelancer recruitment job platform, where all these types of employers end up. These employers advertise physically demanding jobs paired with technical skills and nasty working hours for the lowest wage possible and then complain about not finding candidates...

Want to land a #federaljob, but having a hard time getting noticed? University of California, Davis put together a federal #resumetemplate with some helpful tips. Check out the template: ➡https://lnkd.in/ggfks9_z ✴ The two-page limit for private sector resumes will actually hinder you when applying for federal jobs - so elaborate as much as possible on your federal resume! ✴ Add a "Position Applying for" Section with the job title/series/grade. ✴ Include Personal Information such as citizenship and veteran's preference. ✴ Present a Qualifications Summary to list several key skills, experiences, licenses, and abilities that you have. If reviewers only look at your resume for a few minutes, what key things about you would you want them to know? ✴ Federal resumes are chronological. Start with your current job and work backwards. ✴ The following information MUST be included for all of the jobs you list: --First line: Put the dates you held the position (month/year – month/year) and the job title in bold. --Second line: Name of organization, city/state/zip. --Third line: Salary (per hour/month/year), Number of hours per week (e.g., 40 hours/week). --Fourth line: Supervisor’s name and contact info (phone and e-mail), indicate whether or not he/she can be contacted. ✴Using a bulleted list, include professional organizations that you belong to, especially if they relate to the type of work, you do or want to do. ✴ On Federal resumes, references are not required. However, it would be helpful to have three references and their contact information on the resume just in case the interviewer would like to contact them after they interview you. #WeWorkWhereYouPlay FHWA Central Federal Lands #ResumeTips #FederalHiring #Hiring

Another disadvantage of job hopping is it can make your work history look inconsistent, as you may end up holding several job titles in a short time. Some employers may worry you were unable to gain substantial skills in each job before you moved to a different role. You can combat this by pursuing additional training in your new position to showcase your commitment and deepen your skills. For example, if you leave an accounting job after six months because a graphic design position opened up that you wanted, commit to graphic design by pursuing certifications and taking online courses outside of work. This could show employers you take your career seriously and work hard to build the skills that are necessary to advance.
