Almost 20% of children and young people ages three to 17 in the U.S. have an emotional, mental, behavioral or developmental disorder, and there was a 40% increase in suicidal behaviors among high school students in the decade before 2019, according to an NIH report.

Recent studies show a rise in the need for mental health care for America's youth. In 2021, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, reported an increase in depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation symptoms in children and adolescents. In 2023, he issued an advisory pointing to social media as a catalyst for the youth mental health crisis.      With the rise in mental health conditions among children growing, parents have found themselves struggling to afford the cost of proper professional care. As of January 2024, counselors and marriage and family therapists are officially Medicare Part B providers. National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition are offering a set of informative sessions for providers on addressing the clinical needs of older adults with mental health conditions. Both webinars are being held in collaboration with the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging.    March 20—Older Adult Mental Health 101 Though older adults have lower rates of mental health and substance use issues than younger adults, these issues can impact functioning and quality of life more profoundly when coupled with the compounding factors that often accompany the normal aging process. Mental health clinicians need an understanding of the unique ways that these disorders can present in older adults, along with evidence-based assessments and treatments.   March 21—The Process of Working with Older Adults in Psychotherapy Counseling older adults can look a bit different from working with younger adults.
