Second Harvest Inland Northwest has been living sustainably for over 50 years. A core part of our work, getting food to people facing hunger is the rescue of food that may otherwise go to waste. Today we have a program called Grocery Rescue that matches neighborhood foodbanks with grocery stores, we rescued 12.5 million pounds of food in 2023. We also work with many food producers to get donations. Our total food distribution in 2023 was over 35 million pounds and most of that was rescued and donated. As we enter 2024 our sustainability efforts and commitment to feeding people facing hunger continues. In fact, we are leaning in even more aggressively to get the most out of our operations with Zilch – an effort to waste less and feed more. Since the beginning of the year, we have added 19 new organizations that we are helping. There are lots of ways for the business community to be a part of this effort through sponsorship and volunteering.  #sustainability #Zilch #helpingeachother

The US is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet the wealth inequity gap continues to widen, the middle class seems to be disappearing, the cost of living expense increases is outpacing rise in wages, and, and, and... the list goes on. All of these "ands" are creating multiple levels of insecurity-- food insecurity, housing insecurity, education insecurity, wage insecurity. I know several of my friends Christopher Morris, CUDE, CCUFC and Mark Volz, CUDE, CCM who continue to give of their resources and time at these food pantries in Madison. What if each of us were for 30 days to give up "something" that we enjoy (i.e. Starbucks, eating out weekly) and instead donate either that money or goods in kind to our local food pantries? And then once you have figured out that you can probably do without one or two things of small cost in your life, continue to donate that money! Or even maybe go a day without eating anything and provide the money equivalent of meals for that one day to food banks and pantries...and oh by the way it might give you a small "taste" of what it is like not to have food to eat and how that impacts you not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. September is National Hunger Action Month. And as the communities we serve continue to grow, along with food prices rising, more people are experiencing homelessness or relying on food banks and related services than ever before. Feed the Need in Durham, which distributes food to local food banks and hunger relief programs, now serves an average of 22,000 visits per month. We are committed making a positive difference in the communities we serve. That's why we support initiatives like Gleaners Foodbank's Growing Dome Project, which allows fresh produce to be grown year-round for those in need. Our funding helped make this project a reality, ensuring our community has access to healthy greens even during the coldest months. A circular approach to re-use, repair and recycling provides benefits not only for the planet but it can also generate commercial opportunity, provide services to the community, as well as realising local talent. toogoodtowaste is a re-use charity based in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Through strong commercial partnership with business and the local community, toogoodtowaste receive donations from retailers, house clearances, office refurbishments and domestic household collections. As a result, the impact of consumption was reduced by extending the useful life of items as well as reducing the impact of the retail decline in the South Wales Valleys. Can someone help me estimate the TRUE cost of this broccoli for our local farmers, community, and environment? The journey of moldy broccoli from Mexico: The broccoli was bought in bulk at a very low cost. It passed through at least four warehouses (Mexico, California, Philadelphia, Northeastern PA) before it was "expected" to fight hunger. 🌍🚛 However, the broccoli did not feed people. The organization sent it to a hog farm. This process steals resources from the food pantry, yet the charitable food system claims the food as served and CO2e saved.
