"A new report says Ontario is in a “crisis state” when it comes to accessibility, noting it’s a “near certainty” the government will fail to meet its goal of making the province accessible for people with disabilities by 2025.” -The Globe and Mail It’s concerning news given that nearly 3 million Ontarians live with a disability and could benefit from the implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), which was passed in 2005. AODA is a law that sets out several accessibility standards designed to remove barriers and increase access to goods, services, facilities, transportation, information, and employment for people with disabilities. Now that it’s clear that these goals won’t be met by the 2025 deadline, the province is tasked with forming a crisis committee to be chaired by Premier Doug Ford. As a grants professional this is a topic that I have been reflecting on lately. The charity model of disability has a long history in philanthropy and it is completely unnecessary and outdated. Your fundraising narrative doesn't need to be centered around "doom and gloom" scenarios to be successful. Grant makers should ideally focus on supporting positive outcomes (employment, education, quality of life, etc.) rather than viewing disability as a problem in need of fixing.
