5-Minute Self-Care Rituals for Busy Nurses 🧑⚕️🩺 We know, nurses, that your shifts are anything but a walk in the park. Between patient care, charting, and the emotional toll, finding time for yourself feels impossible. But here's the truth: self-care isn't a luxury; it's essential to keep giving your best. So, here are 5 rituals you can squeeze into even the craziest day: Mindful Breathing: Find a quiet corner (even the supply closet works! ), close your eyes, and take 5 deep breaths. Focus on the sensation of air filling your lungs and leaving your body. Gratitude List: Jot down 3 things you're grateful for. It shifts your focus to the positive, even amidst chaos. Hand Massage: A quick hand massage with lotion boosts circulation and eases tension. Bonus: it feels amazing! Nature Break: Step outside for 5 minutes, even if it's just to feel the sun on your face. Nature has a calming effect. Stretching: Simple stretches at your desk or in the break room release muscle tension and improve blood flow. Remember, self-care isn't selfish. It's how you recharge so you can continue to care for others. What's your go-to 5-minute self-care ritual? Propeaq light glasses are used during the nightshift in many hospitals in the Netherlands. The special glasses that emit blue light gives energy and have an effect on the day and night rhythm. The interchangeable orange lenses makes it more easy to fall asleep after the work. Quality of work Working at night can disrupt the biological clock. In the short term, this can lead to sleep disruption and less alertness and decreased concentration. In the longer term, night work can even lead to metabolic diseases and other illnesses. That is why it was investigated in many field studies whether the special glasses had a positive effect for nurses and doctors. With these glasses, care providers experience fewer complaints during night shifts, employees enjoy their work more and the quality of work improves. A Nurse's Worst Nightmare:The Devastating Consequences of Fatigue As I heard the chilling story of a dedicated nurse who worked 7 consecutive night shifts and fell asleep at the wheel, I couldn't help but wonder: are we sacrificing our own well-being for the sake of our patients? The truth is, nurse fatigue is a silent epidemic that's putting lives at risk - not just our own, but those of our patients too. It's time to break the silence and prioritize our own rest and self-care. Here are some tips to help manage workload and prioritize rest: 🏵️ Take breaks:_ Use your breaks to rest and recharge. Even a short power nap or some fresh air can make a big difference. 🏵️ Prioritize sleep:_ Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help your body and mind recover from the demands of shift work. 🏵️ Communicate with your team:_ Don't be afraid to ask for help or swap shifts when needed. Your colleagues will understand. 🏵️ Set boundaries:_ Learn to say no to extra shifts or responsibilities that can interfere with your rest time. 🏵️ Self-care:_ Make time for activities that bring you joy and help you relax, such as exercise, reading, or spending time with loved ones. Let's make rest a priority and break the cycle of fatigue. Our patients deserve the best version of us, and so do we. #NurseSelfCare #RestIsKey #NurseLife #WorkLifeBalance #Healthcare #NursingTips

🩺 Nurses and Nurse Practitioners: Prioritize Your Self-Care! 🩺 As healthcare professionals, we often put others' needs before our own. But remember, taking care of yourself is essential to providing the best care for your patients. Here are some practical self-care tips: 1). Schedule "Me Time": Set aside 15–30 minutes daily for activities you enjoy, like reading, walking, or meditating. 2). Stay Hydrated: Take a water bottle and drink regularly throughout your shift. 3). Balanced Diet: Eat nutritious meals and snacks to maintain energy levels, pack your lunch if possible, and pack your snacks to avoid hitting the snack machine at work! 5). Mindfulness: Practice deep breathing exercises or mindfulness techniques to reduce stress. 6). Get Moving: Incorporate physical activity into your routine, whether just a quick stretch or a short walk; we must practice what we preach. 7). Rest and recharge: aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to help your body recover. 8). Connect: Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues for support and connection. Remember, self-care is not a luxury—it's a necessity. Take care of yourself so you can continue to take care of others. 💙 #SelfCare #NurseLife #HealthcareHeroes #Wellness #NursePractitioner #HealthcareProfessionals

#FeatureFriday: Congratulations to Heba Mohedat, MSN, RN, University of Buffalo, for publishing a research paper: Mohedat, H., & Somayaji, D. (2023). Journal of Advanced Nursing, 79, 2815–2829. https://lnkd.in/d4eb5V-K This review evaluated and summarized the findings of the published literature that explores nurses' sleep knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to improving hospitalized patients' sleep. The findings revealed that nurses still need extra support through training that target nurses' knowledge, attitudes and confidence towards implementing sleep hygiene interventions to improve patients' sleep. https://lnkd.in/dy2hx-dx
