This initiative comes as a response to the public’s frustration with electric utility companies' slow restoration of power despite clear storm warnings. Chaired by Sen. Charles Schwertner and with Sen. Phil King as the vice chair, the committee is tasked with investigating the preparedness and responsiveness of electric utility companies to tropical weather events. The committee, comprising members heavily from the Houston area—severely impacted by Hurricane Beryl—aims to ensure that such a failure in utility services is not repeated. 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒔: 𝐒𝐞𝐧. Entergy Texas Update: "As of 7 p.m. Thursday, Entergy Texas restoration crews have turned the lights back on for approximately 162,800 of the 252,460 customers impacted by Hurricane Beryl. Most of the remaining outages are in heavily damaged areas requiring more extensive repairs. Crews will continue to assess damage in hard-hit areas while safely restoring power as quickly as possible to communities." "Entergy Texas restoration is done in an orderly and deliberate manner. Power is first restored to critical community infrastructure and essential services such as hospitals, water treatment plants, police and fire stations, and communication systems. Next, lines serving large areas of customers, then neighborhoods are restored. This process returns power to the largest number of customers in the shortest amount of time. Some homes and businesses take longer, as individual customer homes or businesses with damage are often the most time-consuming repairs." https://lnkd.in/gyGSynPz #montgomerycountytx #entergy #powerrestoration #hurricaneberyl

Tropical Storm Beryl has hit the Texas coast hard, bringing heavy rains and powerful winds that have left over 2 million homes and businesses without power. Streets are flooded, and rescue teams are working around the clock to help stranded residents. Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane with winds up to 80 mph, causing significant storm surges and flooding that have isolated several coastal communities. The storm has already caused tragic losses, with at least two people killed by falling trees. The severe weather has knocked down hundreds of trees, damaged homes, and crushed vehicles, creating dangerous conditions for residents. In Houston, emergency crews are performing dramatic rescues as fast-rising floodwaters trap people in their homes and cars. With more rain expected, the threat of flash flooding and tornadoes continues to loom over the region. The power grid is heavily impacted, with millions in the Houston area left without electricity. Emergency response plans are in place, but ongoing high winds and flooding are delaying restoration efforts. Critical facilities like hospitals and police stations are being prioritized, but it may take time before power is fully restored to all affected areas. President Joe Biden is receiving updates on the storm, and federal agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and FEMA, are actively involved in search and rescue operations. With hurricane season in full swing and more storms potentially on the horizon, Texas residents are urged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines to navigate through these challenging times. What are your thoughts on the response efforts so far? How do you think communities can better prepare for future storms? Share your experiences and ideas on how we can improve resilience in the face of such natural disasters. https://lnkd.in/evJXGVWX

Just as a doctor's evaluation encompasses more than just height and weight, effective hurricane tracking requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond wind speed considerations. Hurricane Beryl's impact in Texas serves as a stark reminder that even storms labeled as lower-category can unleash devastating destruction. The limitations of the Saffir-Simpson Scale, which has been in use since 1973, become evident when crucial factors like storm size, speed, and local infrastructure are not taken into account. Former FEMA Director Craig Fugate's advocacy for a more detailed storm preparedness strategy highlights the importance of a holistic approach in assessing potential risks. To adequately prepare for unpredictable storm impacts, it is essential to consider a range of factors beyond wind speed alone. This includes utilizing resources such as FEMA flood zone maps and heeding nuanced insights provided by local weather forecasts. Embracing a broader perspective when evaluating storms is vital to safeguarding both homes and financial well-being against the varying threats posed by hurricanes. https://lnkd.in/e8uaXg8z

As we begin the process of recovery after Hurricane Beryl, we know that many of you are facing significant damage to your homes and properties. Our hearts go out to those who have been affected, and we want to support you in any way we can. As you work to rebuild and restore, please remember that safety should be your top priority. Here are some important tips to consider: As you access roofs and use ladders, please exercise extreme caution. Roofs may be structurally compromised, and ladder safety is crucial. Ensure proper footing and stay alert to your location to the roof’s edges. Additionally, be aware of power line hazards. Always assume downed power lines are live and stay away. Report downed power lines and gas leaks to 9-1-1 immediately. When using generators, please follow safety guidelines to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and electrical shock. Use generators outside, away from doors, windows, and vents; keep them dry; and let them cool before refueling. Let’s look out for each other and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents. #csc #compliancesafetyconsulting #safetyprofessionals #safetyexcellence #safetyteam #oshacompliance #hurricaneberylrecovery

‼️ If you live in Coastal Virginia, it is important to know your hurricane evacuation zone. 🌀 “Know Your Zone” serves roughly 1.25 million residents who live in Coastal Virginia, the region of the state most vulnerable to hurricanes and other tropical storms. Twenty-three localities participate in the tiered evacuation zones. Zones were developed in close coordination with local emergency managers throughout Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula and the Eastern Shore based on the most up-to-date engineering data for the region. Zones are designated A through D. Zones provide residents with clarity on whether they should evacuate in an emergency or shelter at home, based on their physical street address and the nature of the emergency event. When a serious storm is expected to threaten or impact Virginia’s coastal regions, state and local emergency agencies will work with local news media outlets, as well as social media channels, that will then broadcast and publish evacuation directives to the public. This website displays a detailed, interactive, color-coded map showing each evacuation zone. Residents can use the map to view their region or zoom in to their residential neighborhood and street. Users can enter their physical address in the search bar to view and confirm their designated evacuation zone. Learn more, here: https://lnkd.in/gjfbi_aN

With meteorologists predicting active hurricane and wildfire seasons this year, EEI and our member companies remind customers that now is the time to prepare for extreme weather events and other emergencies that could cause power outages. Proactively taking simple steps to get ready now can be greatly beneficial if, and when, an emergency occurs. “Forecasters are predicting high wildfire risk and one of the most active Atlantic hurricane seasons on record, with 17 to 25 major named storms expected,” said EEI Senior Vice President of Security and Preparedness Scott Aaronson. “EEI and our member companies are preparing and working closely with our industry and government partners on mitigation, preparation, and response plans. While electric companies work hard to limit outages and to respond quickly when they occur, we urge customers to make their own plans and to prepare now should extended power outages occur.” Read more about preparing for hurricane and wildfire seasons in EEI's press release: https://lnkd.in/erncMri6 #stormsafety #hurricaneseason #wildfireseason
