Last month I published on Towards Data Science about my journey from physics PhD to machine learning. Since the article came out, I've gotten variations on the following question from so many physicists and mathematicians: ❓❓ "What advice do you have for someone breaking into ML?" ❓❓ 🔑 Here is far and away the most helpful advice I can give: build away! 🏗️ ⚛️🧮 In physics and math — at least in the early stages of your journey — most learning is done in the classroom 🏫, reading textbooks 📚, and doing practice problems ✍️. Learning in these disciplines is pedagogical 🧑🏫. This is a major simplification — you develop intuition by solving problems, asking questions, and talking to others — but the essence of math and physics education follows this pattern. 🤖🧠 In machine learning (and software more broadly), I've found that the best way to learn is by building. Find projects you are passionate about, start building, and learn by overcoming challenges along the way. I still highly recommend understanding the math underlying ML/deep learning, but beyond that, you will develop intuition (and learn new technologies!) by trying, failing, and going back to the drawing board! I'm incredibly fortunate that at Voxel51 I've gotten to work on some incredibly cool projects, from vector search integrations (Qdrant, Zilliz, LanceDB (YC W22), Pinecone), to building an LLM-powered application (VoxelGPT) with LangChain, to AI telephone (Stability AI, OpenAI's DALL-E2)!
