One of the challenges we often hear from our young patients of childbearing age, who opt for a hysterectomy to address the years of suffering caused by fibroids or endometriosis, is the pressure from physicians to sway their decision or recommend procedures that don’t align with their important personal choices or future family planning wishes. Consider the case of K, a woman in her early 30s who has dealt with chronic pain for years due to endometriosis. Her experience highlights a narrative we frequently encounter: patients feeling unseen and unheard in their healthcare journey. It also underscores the crucial importance of active listening in patient care. “How to Get Your Affairs in Order” – Online – Thursday, March 14, 2024 (2 pm – 3:30 pm central time) This program will provide suggestions for when a doctor says it’s time to “get your affairs in order.” We will examine a checklist for the dying and how many of the items on such a checklist can be done years before a diagnosis. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: ∙ Understand how planning for the end of life leads to a better death someday and a better life right now. ∙ Recognize the importance of making plans, writing them down, and sharing them with others. ∙ Identify actions that reduce fears and anxiety. ∙ Recognize the ways that death doulas, care teams, elder care attorneys, and loved ones help support people at the end of life. If you have had a family member that has recently had an emergency room/urgent care visit, you’ll know that wait times are escalating. From January to June 2023, the average monthly median wait time in all WRHA ER/UC = 2.73 hours. From January to June 2024 the average monthly median wait time in all WRHA ER/UC = 3.62 hours. This data includes Concordia, Grace, HSC (Adult), HSC (Children’s), Seven Oaks, St. Boniface, and Victoria General Hospital. Notably, Seven Oaks and St. B have gotten particularly worse. For Seven Oaks in particular, January to June 2023 was 2.89 hours, whereas January to June 2024 is 4.58 hours (up 1.69 hours). For St. Boniface January to June 2023 was 3.28 hours, whereas January to June 2024 is 5.10 hours (up 1.82 hours). Summer season is considered trauma season on the frontline. Emergency medical planning is essential to ensure your wishes are respected in case of incapacity. 🏥 We never think we're going to have an incapacity event, such as a stroke, dementia, or a traumatic brain injury, but statistics show these are some of the most common causes of incapacity. Make sure you're prepared with a Medical Power of Attorney that appoints someone you trust to make decisions when you can't. An Advance Directive outlines your preferences for end-of-life care, taking the burden of tough choices off your loved ones' shoulders.
