A brain injury can happen anytime, anywhere to anyone 🧠 Falling on March 20th, #WorldHeadInjuryAwarenessDay prompts us to think of those who have suffered anything from a mild head bump to severe brain injury. The aim of this day also serves to remind us of how we could play a role in reducing accidents and brain injuries through correct usage of safety tools such as seatbelts and helmets. An injury to the head may include a fracture to the skull, concussion or compression that may result in brain damage. When giving first aid to head injuries, always consider that there may be spinal injuries as well. Do the following when on the scene of a head injury: - Instruct the casualty not to move - Steady and support the head and neck (show someone how to do this) - Check for life-threatening situations (ABCs) - Do not stop any bleeding from the nose or ears - Protect any physical injuries on the head by placing padding over - Constantly monitor ABCs - Arrange for medical emergency services #StJohnSouthAfrica #stjohnambulance

World Head Injury Awareness Day was on the 20th of March. Well, I was in theatre that day doing VP shunt, but before then I had done a ward round in which I had discharged a young man with a mild Traumatic Brain injury (TBI) and updated medications for a young lady with moderate TBI. Head injury or Traumatic Brain Injury is common, and affects every age group, but more usually affected are the young adults, and this is most commonly due to Road Traffic Accidents especially in LMICs. Patients with Head Injury can present in different ways - but that is not the aim of this post. The aim of this post is to pass this message: PROTECT YOUR HEAD👩🦰🧑🦰 ×Use a seat belt ×Don't drink alcohol and drive ×Don't text while driving ×If you must pick a call while driving, ensure it's hands-free ×If using public transport, check the vehicle well before entering, if you're not comfortable with the state of maintenance, join another one. If there's none that appears well maintained, hmmm..... ×If you are already in a vehicle and the driver is not driving safely, hmmm, come down oooooo, and protect your head For children, please ensure the environment is safe for your children. +Help children cross roads + Don't leave them unattended to when you are on the road + At home, ensure there are barriers/parapets on your balconeys so they don't fall off. + Place barriers/parapets on your wells so children can't fall in This is by no means an exhaustive list of preventive strategies for head injury. But don't forget the message: PROTECT YOUR HEAD #africanneurosurgery #nigerianneurosurgery #maysneurosurgery
