💡 Entrant techs fresh out of TECH SCHOOL! 🤔 “Here’s 10,000 oil changes for a few years” It’s a culture shock. A student at the top of his or her hierarchy, graduating tech school with a certificate or even a degree. Just like me when I earned my own first college degree. That student then enters the work force, ready to take on the automotive industry and show off what he or she has been studying for the last couple years. But they soon find themselves at the bottom of this new hierarchy as an entrant technician. And that means it’s time to do oil changes and tire rotations for seemingly forever. (At least it feels that way.) But that student now turned technician passed every class. Rebuilt transmissions and engines, diagnosed live vehicles in a lab, and can articulate electrical theory and apply it. Is the oil change life not below such a student? That’s often how they feel anyway. This is why mentorship and leadership is so critical. These students learn the technician knowledge. But what about the behavioral and attitudinal skills and characteristics that are also important for success? Significant advances in material technology and long-term erosion of technicians’ repair skills have favored panel replacement. Insurers put a high premium on repairing more panels (lower cost and faster throughput). BUT lack of skills has become a major drag to the overall process. BETAG’s OPRS program is an opportunity to address the shortage of skilled technicians, increase throughput & gross margin, improve CSI, and create a competitive edge to grow market share. BETAG’s OPRS Program turbocharges the skills of entry level technicians (‘C Techs’) to create productive, more efficient (150%+) non-structural outer panel repair specialists. The means Master Technicians (‘A Techs’) can focus on the complex structural repairs demanding their knowledge and skills, increasing production capacity throughout the whole shop. Learning Pathway BETAG’s OPRS Skill Development Pathway provides a clear roadmap for developing a comprehensive outer panel repair capability. 16 instructor led, workshop based training days are split into 4 blocks of 4-day learning sessions, over 4 months. The instructor led training is complemented by a Skill Development Practice Program that each student is asked to complete and report back on (approximately 1 hour per week).
