Itโs by Ashleigh Searle. Find it on LinkedIn (November 23rd 2023) Unless you have lived experience, it can be tremendously difficult to put ourselves in the shoes of the children and young people we support, to be alongside them and be grounded in the reality of their experience. There are some techniques and exercises that allow us to step closer to lived experience perspectives and for the start of this article, there is one below for you try, please be kind to yourself and seek support if required. As another school year comes to a close, I wanted to list three things I tried to focus on this year, which was my second year as a manager: ๐Listen: To my staff, students, families, and coworkers. Everyone has something to share. Everyoneโs opinions and feelings are valid, though I may not always agree. ๐งฑBuild Relationahips: I did my best building relationships cross-functionally and intend to do more next year. My organization employs many people and we have many departments. I feel like Iโve just scratched the surface with this one and want to do more in this area. ๐ Give Grace: To myself, my staff, and my coworkers. Everyone has a life outside work, not everyone can be 100% all the time. Some days will be better than others. Weโre all human. I really feel like I found my footing this school year and was more confident sharing ideas but also continued to learn more. Early education has changed so much since I started part time in that toddler room in 2008. Iโm not the same person I was then and Iโm certainly not the same teacher. These are also not the same students. All teachers and schools had to make a radical shift to meet the needs of our students and families. Just a few more days and summer vacation begins. Wishing all my teacher and education friends a great summer full of rest, we certainly earned it this year. #earlychildhoodeducator #earlychildhood #headstart #educator

Busy week? I feel as though every conversation I've had on the phone this week has opened with the classic, British, "I can't wait until the weekend!" I include myself in this; it's felt like a particularly busy week, with Christmas fading into the distance and half term, not quite here yet! There's always loads to be done in January, but I liked this very timely reminder that it's not possible to do EVERYTHING .... and that's OK! My advice when I'm struggling to see the wood for the trees: - Take time daily to reflect on what you have achieved, and celebrate it! - Plan for the next day: prioritise and complete the most important jobs first - Communicate regularly and clearly with those around you - let people know if you are not going to finish something, and agree a new timeline, or even better pass things back and say no to new requests - Remember, it's not possible to do it all! Teachers and School staff, you're doing an incredible job! picture credit: Help A Teacher #teachers #schools #workloadmanagement #knowmorecaremore

As parents, we undertake the biggest and most challenging roles of our lives and question if we are making the right choices for our children. Yesterday, we received Bertie's school report and it was great to hear how well he is doing. As full time working parents, it reassured us, we are making the right decisions for us as a family. This report was not just a reflection of Bertie and us as parents; it is a reflection of the whole community of people playing a part in his life, from teachers, through to grandparents, family, friends, neighbours and supportive employers. His report mentioned so many great things. 1. Forming solid friendships. 2. Happy working in groups but really enjoys the challenge of working independently creating and solving problems. 3. Immersed in his learning. 4. Confident to share ideas and question ideas he does not agree with (I know where this trait comes from). 5. Amazing coding skills and wonderful attitude. 6. Excelling in Science and Sports. We are a happy family, we've seen a lot of changes, been through some really challenging times but supported by a great community of people. I will also mention, he is a typical 7 year old boy, he will challenge us, he will push boundaries and we don't always get it right as parents, but we are in this together and we have a home filled with love and understanding. #schoolreport #familylife #supportiveenvironment #workingparents #community #love #family #7 #understanding #home #school #education #proud #happy #bestjob #rewarding

Communication with parents / carers... do we get it right?! This week in the L&D World of East Riding, Andy and I have been exploring Child Protection for Social Work Practitioners. Two very busy training days filled with activities, from considering how we can be the most reflective and curious practitioners, to our competition of who can gather the most information with just 7 questions. But in the midst of all the process of CP, we've spent time really drilling down on the importance of communication, whether that be ensuring the parents have understood the question or if the network are clear on the agreed actions, we agreed this is not always easy. Communication is not simple. There are so many unspoken barriers to a simple conversation that can leave 2 people on a completely different page. Communication is further complicated when one or more of those involved has either a learning disability or social / communication difficulty. Understanding how to best communicate with each other needs to be a starting point for all new relationships, this will help reduce the likelihood of miscommunication and the frustration that comes with that. Love this video, it really reflects why getting this right from the start is essential. ๐ฉท #StongerTogether
Experienced research and evaluation professional across public sector in general and social care specifically.
Between March 2022 and December 2023 I led a project on โThe role of adult social care for parents with learning disabilities when a child is no longer in their care'. It was funded by NIHR School of Social Care and I may owe an apology to them. If I had stuck to the brief it would have been a short project so I explored the wider role of support for parents with a learning disability and how adult and children social care worked together - or not - to provide support for a parent with a learning disability, including in eight case studies across England. Over 330 professionals contributed to this research, as well as interviews with nine parents. It would have been good to interview more parents, but they are often hidden from view and reluctant to tell their story. However, our work was supported by Elfrida Societyโs parentsโ group, with its members contributing to the development of interview schedules, materials for parents and some of the analysis. ย The report will be published in the near future, along with articles and conference presentations. One of the findings was that social workers in childrenโs social care did not always feel they had the skills to work with parents with a learning disability or know where to go for support. We have worked with Mencap Cymru and Pause in LB Southwark to produce an animation for social workers (particularly students and early career social workers). Do have a look and see what you think. https://lnkd.in/g3-DJx76 ย
