How Education Came to Influence My Fatherhood By Jerome Danner (Gré Motiv) 2018 was quite the year for me. I became a father for the second time. Two months later, I darkened the doors of a public school for the first time, hoping to enlighten young minds. In the beginning, I thought my fatherhood would influence my profession as an educator. After six years in education, I have come to believe that my vocation has had more of an impact on my calling (my state as a father). When You Are New to Teaching When you are new to teaching, it is easy to come in the halls of a public school with high hopes. You may even have visions of grandeur with thoughts of kids floating in and out of your classroom on cloud nine believing that you are the greatest teacher that they have ever had. (Okay, maybe this was only me.) Nevertheless, blind optimism is soon extinguished by a jolt of reality. When one starts to engage with teenagers and pre-teens, you start to realize that they do not enter your classroom with a longing to grow intellectually. Many of them, maybe most of them, will be dismissive of you and your class altogether. The new educator wants to make a difference in these young people’s lives. Yet, the real difference will take place within them. https://lnkd.in/ei4S6Vyh #teacher #educator #father #parenting

Count me among the students Judy Brown helped during her 43 years at Watkinson School . As a new educator, here are some #wordsofwisdom I gleaned from Judy's career: 🥉 Keep your humanity front and center. Often, this advice is applied in the context of interacting with students (e.g: see students as human), but I think that it is easier to be human as a student—especially if you happen to be a student with one or more marginalized identity—if the people in power who you interface with (that means educators in all roles) first own their own fallibility—and lives outside of work! An easy way to set these kind of humanity-affirming (and thus healthy) expectations: Explicitly say when you check your emails/other work communications in your email signature, syllabus, or any other student-facing information page. If you, for example, work from 9 to 5 on Mondays through Fridays then, this way, a student who sends an email at 6 PM at Friday KNOWS that you are not blowing them off if you respond at 9 AM on Monday. Another (more fun) way to display your humanity is to have mementos in your office or virtual space, inviting conversation about hobbies and other non-work dimensions of life. (No person is one-dimensional!) 📧 🍋 🥈 Don't forget about SMART goals. At least for me, this is something I tend to slip with as the school year / semester goes on, but they're called SMART goals for a reason! And they're smart for students and educators alike! Start a meeting with discussion of goals named (and preferably written or in some other way made "tangible") last time. End a meeting with articulation of new goals and/or refinement of previously-articulated goals. Ambition is important, but ambition without direction is a recipe for burnout. And victories of any size are revitalizing—and call for celebration! 📋 🔥 In case you need a reminder of what SMART goals are: Specific Measurable Achievable Relevant Time-Based 🥇 Always maintain a curiosity stance. Enter as a co-investigator, not the judge. Combine your expertise (e.g: of a program's GPA requirements, of your class' rules around late work, etc.) with the expertise of the student (e.g: career goals, circumstances that led to work not being completed on-time, etc.). You are on the same team! And even if you do not get the result that you want, there is always a learning experience to be gleaned. 🔎 🧠 What lessons have you learned from retiring educators who touched your life? Please share in this space! 💭 #grateful #reflection #educator

"As a first-generation student, her parents had little advice to offer, and her university didn’t provide any personalized academic advising." Great story of the Resilience of First-Gen Warriors. It really is a complicated process to navigate on your own as a young adult without any support. It can be so overwhelming, students can get lost and discouraged to finish the process. Yesterday, I attended my Graduation Ceremony at ACU. My parents, grandparents, sister, and fiance drove over four hours to watch the graduation. This event was not just to celebrate the hard work I have put in over the last five years. It was equally about saying thank you to those who supported me through this long journey. Well, at least that was what it should have been about. Instead, Joe de Bruyn hijacked the event, giving a speech that led to a mass exodus of nearly the entire crowd. What he said is not worth repeating here, and plenty of articles detail its contents. What he said had nothing to do with graduation, celebration, or a thank you to anyone. His words simply ruined the day for many. Everyone has the right to express their beliefs. However, there is a time and place for everything. Clearly, the graduation ceremony was not the time or place to express your anti-lbgtqi+, anti-abortion and anti-IVF rhetoric. I know I did not pay over $200 to listen to that. I rarely post on social media, especially about stuff like this, because it often does not create change. However, ACU students have created a petition to have Joe de Bruyn stripped of his honorary doctorate. So, if you believe that somebody who claims that abortion is worse than WWII should have their honorary doctorate stripped from them, please sign the petition attached below. https://chng.it/XyCcHXFxMj
