There are three core factors to consider in attracting top talent: 1️⃣ Company mission If you are a 25-person scale-up, don’t try to hire from IBM or Microsoft. Hire from an organisation that is where you’ll be in 1-3 years. This person can show you the way and will roll up their sleeves and get on with it. BUT make sure they are prepared to climb the hill again, maybe they like their new plateau. 2️⃣ Cultural fit If you are a conservative sales environment, and not looking to radically change, don’t hire from a sales environment that under this person’s tenure has seen 300%+ YOY growth - the two aren’t culturally aligned. Either they will leave or the rest of your team will. 3️⃣ Compensation, benefits and working conditions While often not the top of the list you need to ensure that you are in-line with both the market and the candidate. The WORST thing that you can do for your company brand is to take someone through a 5 stage hiring process and then offer them a lower compensation than they already make, or four days in the office when they are currently four days remote (unless you have specifically discussed this at the initial stage of interviews). 👉 If you truly understand what your company is now and your values, the results can be revolutionary to a business's performance! 👈 With better hires comes greater staff retention, and therefore greater results. ❔ So, why should someone join your team? What is a talent competitor? There are competitors, those who sell the same products/ services as you, and there are talent competitors, those who hire the same people as you. These are usually in the same industry, but not always. For example, if you are hiring for sales and you are in the construction tech space, you could easily be competing for talent with everyone from Staples to Microsoft to recruiting agencies. For this reason, it’s important to understand not just what makes your product better than your competitors, but what makes your workplace better than your talent competitors. Yes, prospective candidates care about how your products/ services are positioned in the market, but they care more about what it will be like to work for you.
