Today kicked off #ConstructionSafetyWeek! Today's topic is all about driving personal ownership. It’s important that every one of us accepts a greater level of responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others. When it comes to safety, whether it be an unsafe condition or behavior, if you see it, you own it, if you walk by it, you condone it. Check out this great video for more on today's topic: https://lnkd.in/eHNMGnVB #construction #constructionindustry #constructionnews #constructionnetworking #constructionsafety

As part of The ProLift Rigging Company's observance of Construction Safety Week, we are passing along important content created for the furtherance of safety in our industry. We will be posting a different topic each day throughout the week. https://lnkd.in/eHNMGnVB MONDAY: DRIVING PERSONAL OWNERSHIP Although the construction industry has extensive safety standards, processes, and procedures in place to keep us safe, serious accidents and dangerous events can occur at any time unless we continue to maintain consistent focus. It’s important that every one of us accepts a greater level of responsibility for our own safety and the safety of others. Like I do every March, over the last few days I’ve been thinking of my friend David. Seven years ago on a Thursday in March my friend David was killed in a trench collapse. It was what I consider a perfect storm of poor safety conditions. It was late in the afternoon, they were working 4-10s and the guys were ready to go home. It was drizzly out and so the ground was muddy and stuck to your boots. The safety equipment necessary to enter the trench was on site, but on the other side of the site, and consequently wasn’t being used. The crew just needed to finish one more little thing and they could go home for the weekend, it would only take a minute. The sitedrain fabric they were unrolling in the ditch got folded up and they couldn’t spread the gravel on it. So, David did what many of us have done before, he decided that he would go down into the ditch and take care of it. In true leader fashion, never asking someone to do something he was unwilling to do himself, he walked down to where they had already backfilled the trench and ran the 40 or so feet back to where the fabric was. It would only take a minute. While he was working in the unprotected trench, it collapsed, instantly burying him under several tons of wet soil. I think about David often. He’s my constant companion as I walk through job sites and he’s in the back of my head when I make safety plans for sites that I run. I can’t explain how much that day impacted me in my professional career. Whenever I’m tempted to take a shortcut, I stop and think of my friend. We're all tempted sometimes to take a risk because it will only be a minute. I'm here to tell you that sometimes, that's all it takes. Work safe out there today. Do it for David. #construction #constructionsafety #safety #safetyculture

🚚🍳 Good morning from Savannah, where our dedicated fleet safety team kicked off their day with a safety breakfast. It’s not just about starting the day with good food; it’s about emphasizing the critical role of fleet safety at Thomas Concrete. Why is fleet safety so paramount? Consider this: a standard mixer truck, when fully loaded, can weigh over 60,000 lbs and measures about 30 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 13 feet high. Navigating such a massive vehicle safely demands meticulous maintenance and regular safety checks. This is why our fleet mechanics focus on preventative maintenance, and our Concrete Delivery Professionals conduct thorough pre- and post-trip checks daily, ensuring everything from fluids and tires to brakes, chutes, lights, and horns are in top condition. Our goal is simple: every member of #TeamThomas should return home in as good or better shape than when they left for work in the morning. It’s a commitment that drives every decision we make and every action we take in the realm of fleet safety. How does your team prioritize fleet safety and well-being? Share your best practices in the comments. #FleetSafety #SafetyFirst #NationalSafetyMonth

At NDTA, safety is paramount in everything we do. As we celebrate Construction Week, we want to underscore the importance of safety in dump truck operation and maintenance. Whether you're a seasoned operator or new to the field, these tips will help keep you and those around you safe on the job site. 1. Know Your Equipment Inside Out: Before operating a dump truck, familiarize yourself with its controls, functions, and safety features. Conduct pre-operation checks to ensure everything is in working order, including brakes, lights, and hydraulic systems. 2. Follow Proper Loading Procedures: Overloading a dump truck can compromise stability and increase the risk of accidents. Please always follow the manufacturer's recommended load capacity and distribution guidelines. Secure loads properly to prevent shifting during transit. 3. Drive Defensively: Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times while operating a dump truck. Keep a safe distance from other vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles. Avoid sudden maneuvers and maintain a steady speed, especially when navigating uneven terrain. 4. Practice Safe Dumping: When unloading materials, choose a level, firm surface away from overhead obstructions. Engage all safety mechanisms before raising the dump bed, and never stand beneath a raised bed or attempt repairs while it's elevated. 5. Prioritize Preventive Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep dump trucks running smoothly and safely. Schedule routine inspections, servicing, and lubrication according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Address any issues promptly to prevent them from escalating into major problems. 6. Invest in Training: Proper training is key to safe dump truck operation. Ensure all operators receive comprehensive training on equipment usage, safety protocols, and emergency procedures. Encourage ongoing education to stay updated on industry best practices. 7. Communicate Effectively: Establish clear communication channels with coworkers, supervisors, and ground personnel. Use signals, radios, or hand signals to coordinate movements and alert others to potential hazards. By prioritizing safety in dump truck operation and maintenance, we can mitigate risks and create a secure working environment for everyone involved. Remember, safety is not just a priority – it's a mindset. Together, let's make safety a cornerstone of our construction practices. Stay safe! #ConstructionSafetyWeek #ConstructionSafety #DumpTruckSafety #WorkplaceSafety #SafetyFirst #MaintenanceTips #SafetyCulture #EquipmentOperation #NDTA

#ArcherWright crews attending this morning's Safety Stand Down in Henderson County, NC. These crews, who work on our joint venture NCDOT I-26 Expansion Project, are learning about the hazards of pinchpoints and staying out of the "line of fire." A simple definition of “line of fire” is being in harm’s way. Line of fire injuries occur when the path of a moving object or the release of hazardous substances intersects with an individual’s body. • To avoid Line of Fire incidents: • Always be aware of any body part that can be exposed to a line of fire/pinchpoint(eyes, hands, fingers, feet). • Never pull tools or equipment toward your body or face. • A Task Hazard Analysis should always be performed to identify all hazards prior to beginning any work. • Barricade the area around a hoisting zone. • If someone is working around equipment, make sure the operator knows where they are at all times. • Never attempt to operate equipment that has been tagged or locked.
