UL Solutions: June 26, 2024 NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS – June 26, 2024 – UL Solutions Inc. (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today announced plans to construct a new Advanced Automotive and Battery Testing Center in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, expanding current UL Solutions battery testing capacity in the region and adding electric vehicle (EV) charger testing and other capabilities. To serve customers across the Asia Pacific region, the center, expected to open in the second half of 2025, will help strengthen Korea’s EV industry, respond to increased demand from new and existing customers, and provide faster access to safety and performance testing and other services. “The global transition to sustainable energy has driven innovation in the automotive industry, which can be seen clearly in Korea and across Asia,” said Jennifer Scanlon, president and CEO of UL Solutions, who visited Governor Kim Dong-yeon of Gyeonggi Province during a recent trip to Korea. “Innovation cannot succeed without safety, and we are pleased to work closely with automakers and other customers as together we build an industry that is safer, more secure, and more sustainable.” The new facility, construction of which is subject to local government approvals, including zoning, will provide expanded EV battery testing capacity. This laboratory will leverage the technology used in the recently opened UL Solutions Korea Advanced Battery Laboratory in Pyeongtaek to test for reliability and performance. Plans also include an EV charger testing laboratory and an EV battery material laboratory. "Addionics invests $400 million in domestic EV battery manufacturing, plans factory in US" 🇮🇱 🇺🇸 Battery tech provider Addionics plans to invest $400 million in its US manufacturing facilities as part of a three-phase multi-factory plan to boost domestic EV battery production. The first plant is expected to begin production in 2027, and additional plants are to be completed by 2032. Once completed, the factories will produce tens of thousands of tons of 3D copper foil per year, enough to support 90 GWh of battery capacity. Addionics says it has substantial demand from American and European automotive and battery OEMs for its products. This is a very strategic move for OneD Battery Sciences and Koch Modular. Silicon will be an important addition to next generation batteries. But using silicon to increase energy density is not enough: the silicon technology must also be a factor in decreasing the cost of the batteries. Finally, most OEMs are working hard on decreasing the dependency of the EV battery supply chain on supply from China and decreasing the carbon footprint of the key materials. Today, virtually all of the EV-grade synthetic graphite and natural graphite used in the US and in Europe EV cell factories comes from China. This partnership will enable a western supply chain for silicon-graphite anode materials using OneD‘s patented technology for Si-Nanowires.
Today, OneD Battery Sciences and Koch Modular announced a strategic partnership centered on producing #silicon-graphite anode materials on a large scale. Together, OneD and Koch Modular are designing two co-located plants: one to produce silane gas and the other to use the gas to add silicon inside EV-grade graphite, using the patented #SINANODE manufacturing process. The integrated plants will produce annually 20,000 tons of silicon-graphite anode materials, enough for making EV batteries for about 1,000,000 EVs per year. We look forward to sharing the continued progress from this partnership as it aids in accelerating the adoption of silicon anode materials in EVs.
