The Question I Get Asked All the Time: What's the Difference Between a Clinical Social Worker and a Clinical Psychologist? I often get this question, most of all from people curious about how healthcare teams work. While both clinical social workers and clinical psychologists are dedicated to improving mental health, their roles are distinct yet complement each other. Let me break it down in a way that's easy to understand: What We Do Together Clinical social workers and clinical psychologists often collaborate to support patients struggling with mental health challenges. Whether it's anxiety, depression, trauma, or navigating life's challenges, we both offer guidance, therapy, and support. In healthcare, teamwork is everything. What separates our paths As a Clinical Social Worker, I help people to understand their environment and daily life challenges. My focus is on the social aspects: family dynamics, work situations, and community resources. I provide assistance and case management, helping connect people with the resources they need. A crucial aspect of my work involves helping people overcome systemic challenges, including finding affordable housing, securing employment, and understanding how to access healthcare services. I link all of this with the patient's treatment plan and provide psychosocial therapy within its general framework Meanwhile, a Clinical Psychologist focuses on understanding and treating mental processes. They specialize in treating mental health conditions using various therapeutic approaches like (CBT), (DBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and other talk therapy techniques.Their expertise extends to conducting psychological assessments, and helping patients develop coping mechanisms for various mental health challenges . They conduct psychological assessments and testing, working to help patients understand and reshape their thought patterns and emotional responses. However, it's important to note that neither clinical psychologists nor clinical social workers prescribe medication-based treatments, as this falls under the responsibilities of psychiatrists. All our treatment approaches are based on non-pharmacological techniques. Why Healthcare Needs Both Mental health isn't one-size-fits-all, and patients deserve care that addresses both their mind and their environment. The partnership between these two professions creates a comprehensive system of care that empowers patients to heal, grow, and thrive. So the next time someone asks me this question, my answer is simple: We're different, but together, we're complementary and highly effective. I hope I have succeeded in answering this question in a simple and concise way. I extend my appreciation to all mental health professionals for their great efforts in providing this wonderful humanitarian work. #MentalHealthCare #ClinicalSocialWork #ClinicalPsychology #HolisticCare #PatientSupport #MentalHealthMatters #TeamworkInCare

Psychologists (and other therapists) are burnt out and lost. We sacrificed 10+ years of our lives training to make the world a better place, only to find out we were lied to the whole time. I went to school for 12 years to learn how to do therapy so that I could use psychology to help people, have control over my schedule, and effect positive change in the world. After graduating, I worked in integrated primary care in rural Appalachia specializing in addiction treatment. Aka, I had premium job security because I was at the top of my field serving a high-need, underserved population in a specialty few psychologists are trained in. But I quickly realized: • I couldn't help people the way I wanted (insurance dictates who you can help + tons of red tape). • I didn't have control over my schedule (therapists are required to see too many patients in a day). • I couldn't effect positive change beyond my one little clinic (licensure requirements prohibit you from helping people outside your service area). In September 2020, I negotiated a remote telehealth position so I could move but keep helping my same patients. Two months later, I got a quick email from my boss: In 30 days, I would be fired. "You didn't do anything wrong. Your patients and coworkers love you, and you do a great job. We're just moving away from telehealth." Because of licensure requirements, I couldn't find another remote job out of WV (my licensed state), wasn't willing to move back, and couldn't wait 4-6 months to get licensed in a new state (the therapy world hasn't caught up with the 21st century). So what I'd spent 12 years of my life pursuing, and sacrificed so much for, I literally couldn't do anymore... I also realized I was burnt out with how broken the therapy world is for clinicians. But I didn't know how to apply my training anywhere else. Throughout grad school, my professors constantly talked trash about the coaching field because it's unregulated, so I never gave it much thought. Luckily around the time I got fired, I read an APA article about life and executive coaching that changed the trajectory of my life. In it, Jeffrey E. Auerbach said, “Psychologists have the most training of any profession in understanding human motivation, behavior, learning and change. And if they’ve done clinical work, they have a depth of one-on-one experience far greater than that of people who aren’t mental health professionals. Coaching is actually a great fit with what most of us already do.” So I got certified as an executive coach through the College of Executive Coaching There's a growing number of therapists who want "more" than just doing therapy, but don't have guidance on what to do. If that's you, coaching just might be what you've been searching for. For the last 4 years, I've had my own coaching business. I can finally use psychology to help people however I want, have complete control over my schedule, and can effect positive change all over the world.

The State of Youth Mental Health: Perspectives from 1,400 Mental Health Professionals The national youth mental health crisis persists, leaving clinicians grappling for solutions amidst resource shortages and increasing demands. A POLITICO survey of 1,400 mental health workers reveals a consensus: the lack of resources exacerbates the crisis, with rural areas particularly underserved. Waitlists stretch for months, and many schools lack sufficient support staff. Clinicians attribute the crisis to multifaceted factors: social media, social isolation, external events, and developmental disruptions due to the pandemic. Anxiety and depression are on the rise, fueled by societal pressures and identity concerns. Yet, barriers to treatment loom large: shortages of trained practitioners, inadequate insurance coverage, and administrative hurdles. Lisa R. Savage, co-founder of Clinicians of Color, advocates for comprehensive reforms, urging policymakers to rethink resource allocation and insurance practices. Savage underscores the need for coordinated efforts to ensure equitable access to mental health care, emphasizing the importance of addressing systemic challenges to alleviate the burden on young minds. #youthmentalhealth #anxiety #depression #paychology #mentalhealth #psychotherapy #psychiatrist #socialworker https://lnkd.in/eWgjej5n

This Week In Group Supervision - 10/30/24 Talking about the variety of treatment models is vital for many reasons. Supervisees may still be trying to land on what they feel is their treatment modality in individual counseling, and exposure to multiple forms is important. For a team approach that you get in community mental health, it is essential to know what other counselors in your practice subscribe to for clients who are seeking services beyond what you offer. I will often provide Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and the client would be better suited for EMDR, Intensive Home-Based Therapy, or something else. This week, we looked at Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a model I do not have much experience with. The other supervisor presenting on the topic shared this Tedx talk by Steven Hayes, PhD, who created the model: https://lnkd.in/gKz4UzYQ For a deeper dive into the model, we reviewed the Positive Psychology article that talks about the different parts of ACT therapy here: https://lnkd.in/gVDb5VNp While I myself have a solid foundation in CBT and Dialectic Behavioral Therapy and maintain a very small caseload, I encouraged my supervisees to consider this model if it resonates with their own philosophies of counseling. And I encourage you also to consider checking out this treatment model if you want to expand your clinical skills. —————— We advocate for supervision with counselors this season, where you should have the support of a team. Appleseed Community Mental Health Center, Inc. offers group supervision for all of its staff, but specifically for all supervisees who are working towards independent licensure. We get to talk weekly about topics counselors and social workers face every day, working through the barriers and implications of improving our practice. We want to share some of these lessons learned and resources found with you. If joining a team like this interests you, I'd love for you to check out the link below for our job opportunities or shoot me a message and let's chat. https://lnkd.in/e46n5dbE

This calls for an immediate response from all sectors to confront and alleviate these critical challenges. We are in a position to drive change–by integrating robust mental health initiatives in our education systems, increasing access to professional help, and ensuring mental wellness is prioritized in our organizational cultures.
