The 1981 race was Porsche’s sixth outright win at the event, and the scaled-down cars carried Porsche part numbers and were reportedly presented to Porsche personnel, drivers, and team members. This example is finished in white with a Jules livery and is powered by a 206cc single-cylinder engine linked to a two-speed manual transmission with reverse. Additional features include a brown cloth seat with black trim, side mirrors, a three-spoke steering wheel, a rear wing, and exterior lights. This article shares how in the early 1950s, Mercedes-Benz sought new sales strategies in the post-war era, leveraging its racing experience to enhance its car lineup. The 300SL Gullwing, derived from the victorious W194 race car, was introduced, but its high price made it a niche product. To appeal to a broader market, Mercedes launched the 190SL. Priced more affordably and based on the Ponton W120 sedan, it still featured race-inspired technology like independent suspension on all four wheels. Mercedes initially created a few 190SL prototypes with the Gullwing's 3.0-liter inline-six engine. However, the production models sold between 1955 and 1963 were equipped with a more modest 1.9-liter inline-four engine (the M121). Porsche 550 With growing competition on the track, Porsche decided to build an exclusive car for racing. A total of 90 550’s was made between 1953 – 1957. Out of the total of 90 cars, 15 were prototype models and late 56’ to early 57’ models were known as 550A’s. A total of 40 550A’s were made, these cars had a full tube spaceframe chassis with rear supportive cross members, and the rear swing axles were replaced with a new low-pivot design improving handling. The 550A gave Porsche its first outright win at a major event in the 1956 Targa Floria. The first 2 prototype 550’s made in 1953 chassis number 550-01 (picture above) and 550-02 could be driven in open top form or as a closed coupe hardtop. These early prototype cars were fitted modified 1500S pushrod Type 502 engines. The compression ratios were increased to 9.0 to 1, slightly enlarged and polished inlet ports and dual-throat Solex carburetors increasing power to 78bhp. #porsche #classiccars #automotivehistory #passion
